| | Stan Getz 'Round Midnight CD Stan Getz Discography of CDs
Velvet toned tenor saxophonist Stan Getz gigged all over northern Europe and Scandinavia from the summer of 1958 through the autumn of 1960. Jazz Hour presents a wonderful album of live recordings made between June 1958 and October 1959 in Frederiksstad, Norway, Copenhagen and Aabenraa, Denmark, and Paris France. Getz found himself collaborating with fellow expatriates and native Europeans alike; noteworthy members of both categories are Kenny Clarke, Martial Solal, Pierre Michelot and Oscar Pettiford, who personally absorbs and consumes much of the "Laverne Walk," transforming it into a bass solo of unforgettable organic immediacy. This is a delightful collection of hard bop and cool jazz the way it sounded and felt in the clubs of Europe during the Khrushchev/Eisenhower era. It is highly recommended for seasoned jazz lovers as well as for those who are new to the tradition and want to know what it's all about. ~ arwulf arwulf 'Round Midnight Review

| | DJ Smash Phonography: Blue Note Remixes CD (2001)
'Round Midnight songs
$31.45 This is a continuous in- the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Smash.
While Blue Note has been ushering in new artists on the electronic and experimental groove scenes, it has become apparent that they have tried to move away from releasing records strictly from the now stagnant world of contemporary jazz -- and hats off to them for it. Unfortunately, Phonography falls short so often that one must wonder if all this "experimentation" for the label is really worth it -- or if, in fact, it's experimentation at all or just an unfocused diversion. DJ Smash mixes together a montage of remixes put together for various artists throughout the Blue Note stable such as Medeski, Martin and Wood, Bob Belden, Ronny Jordan, and Cassandra Wilson. At first this might sound like a good idea, but from the moment this is thrown in the player it becomes evident that this good idea has turned around and bit itself right in the behind. Immediately, one is left to wonder what the motives behind the track selection were as the CD opens with Guru's remix of Medeski, Martin and Wood's "Whatever Happened to Gus" -- a four-and-half-minute romp for Guru to repeat the same verse over and over again. The unfortunate thing is that the track is taken from the Combustication Remix EP which was full of accomplished tracks other than that one. Another example of poor track selection is evident in the three remixes from Bob Belden's record, Strawberry Fields, a weak exploration into the music of the Beatles. Actually, one of the two versions of "Come Together" that is present is pretty good, but the other Belden tracks that are included are almost deplorable and just by the ...
| | Kim Richmond Ballads CD (2001)
'Round Midnight album
$12.95 Back in the '50s and '60s, it wasn't uncommon for straight-ahead jazz artists to record albums containing nothing but ballads -- a practice that A&R people encouraged because they realized that romantic mood music had a lot of commercial appeal. But regrettably, such sessions aren't as prevalent as they once were. Many straight-ahead jazz artists are reluctant to record ballad-oriented projects -- they dislike the idea of going an entire album without showing listeners how hard and fast they can ...

| | Carli Munoz Maverick CD (2005) (Import)
'Round Midnight album
$16.25 The defiant album title and the sternly antiwar liner notes might lead you to expect a program of dull and earnest musical sermonizing, or of vapid free-form noodling. That is, if you don't know pianist and composer Carli Munoz, whose work seems always to be so suffused with joy. Not the fierce, manic joy of a Bud Powell or the serene joy of Bill Evans on a good night, but just plain joy -- with every note he plays you get the impression that he's thrilled to be playing and feels blessed to be where he is. ...

$10.89 | | Dave Koz At The Movies CD (2007) Bonus Tracks
'Round Midnight CD music
$11.35 The contemporary jazz saxophonist Dave Koz explores the world of movie themes on this tribute to classic Hollywood musical moments, with the help of talented jazz and commercial singers like Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Anita Baker, and Donna Summer. Koz's program of popular themes includes THE WIZARD OF OZ's "Over the Rainbow," the theme from THE PINK PANTHER, and the theme from SCHINDLER'S LIST, all performed in his signature mellow style.
DOUBLE FEATURE revisits saxophonist Dave Koz's Grammy-nominated AT THE MOVIES CD on which Koz gave smooth jazz treatments to famous movie themes such as "Over the Rainbow," "Moon River," "The Pink Panther," and "The Way We Were," among others. The set includes the original disc in its entirety plus two additional themes: "Alfie" and "The Godfather." Also in the package is a DVD that includes a documentary on the making of the album, and a host of live performance footage.
Lush, heartfelt, and elegant, At the Movies finds smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz celebrating his favorite movie themes. Featured here are such classic movie melodies as "Over the Rainbow," "The Shadow of Your Smile," and "The Pink Panther" as well as more contemporary songs like "A Whole New World" and the main theme from Schindler's List. Showcased beautifully throughout At the Movies is Koz's deftly melodic and supple saxophone sound, which truly evinces his obvious love of film and film music. It also doesn't hurt that he's often backed by a full orchestra and big band here, adding to the wide-screen, cinematic sound he's going for. Also engaging are Koz's guest artist choices, including trumpeter Chris Botti, and vocalists Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Donna Summer, and others. ...

'Round Midnight music CDs
$9.05 Improbable as it may sound, the sextet was one of the largest groups that Art Tatum ever worked with; it may even be the largest for Tatum, who worked for most of his life with no accompaniment at all, towards the end showed a marked preference for a trio, but rarely ever appeared as one of six. The reasons ...
