Gasoline Rainbows music CDs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Gasoline Rainbows songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the ...

| | Doo Wop Shop CD (1992) (Import) United Kingdom
Gasoline Rainbows music CDs
$17.15 As a 30-song compilation of doo wop from the mid-'50s to the mid-'60s, this suffers both from inconsistency and unfavorable comparisons to numerous superior doo wop anthologies. There actually is a lot of good music here, but it's hard to figure what exactly the audience is for a disc that mixes classic familiar doo wop hits with smaller hits and downright flops. The hits on board here tend to be a little more on the cleaner and whiter side than those on the average doo wop comp, though not exclusively so. The roll call of those hits is fairly long: Dion & the Belmonts' "I Wonder Why," the Earls' "Remember Then," Randy & the Rainbows' "Denise," the Penguins' "Earth Angel," Curtis Lee's "Pretty Little Angel Eyes," Rosie & the Originals' "Angel Baby," the Teen Queens' "Eddie My Love," the Jive Five's "My True Story," the Crests' "The Angels Listened In," the Mystics' "Hushabye," Cathy Jean & the Roommates' "Please Love Me Forever," the Chimes' "Once in a While," and the ...

Gasoline Rainbows music CDs
$17.65 The major product of Jackie DeShannon's brief early-'70s stay on Capitol Records, Songs is also one of her finest and least known albums. Recorded principally in collaboration with producer Eric Malamud, who had previously produced the Persuasions' We Came to Play LP, the album has a curiously lean, stripped down feel -- done with a minimum of players backing her, DeShannon sounds up close and personal here, almost like these are private demos rather than full-blown, finished pop productions. And that was the point -- to get her away from the highly produced sound of her later Liberty recordings. In a sense, this was DeShannon's "get back" album, bringing her back to her musical roots in country and gospel, and it works artistically -- one gets a sense of gritty urgency in most of the songs here, with "Keep Me Warm," Dylan's "Lay Lady, Lay" (done as "Lay Baby, Lay"), and "West Virginia Mine" worth the price of admission by themselves; "Salinas," on which she's not accompanied by much more than a pair of acoustic guitars, is a glorious showcase for her unfettered voice, while "Bad Water" was as fine a rock & roll track as she ever recorded. Even on the handful of numbers that have some string accompaniment, the raw, basic textures aren't lost -- "International" is a great example of how to incorporate strings, reeds and more on an intimate gospel-styled number without destroying the mood. Strangely enough, the one track that shouldn't fit here, "Show Me," a highly "produced" track here that was a product of a series of earlier sessions helmed by Chips Moman that were otherwise abandoned, manages to enhance the value of the album, providing a healthy moment of contrast that demonstrates what DeShannon was doing with her sound without wrecking the effect of what's around it. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Tru 2 Da Game CDs (1997)
Gasoline Rainbows album
$16.39 Ten years after the New Orleans super-group TRU (comprised of Master P, Sillk the Shocker, and C-Murder) smashed the world with their sophomore album, TRU 2 DA GAME, the monumental double CD returns in this re-issue from EMI. TRU 2 DA GAME features a number of No Limit favorites including the 7-minute posse cut, "No Limit Soldiers," as well as the crew's paranoid shout to Rockwell on "I Always Feel Like." Mia X, Kane & Abel, Mo B. Dick, Big Ed, and Serv-On all make cameos. This is a Dirty South classic and a must-have for fans of the genre.

| | Art Of Flamenco CD (1995)
Gasoline Rainbows CD music
$6.19 An album of discount flamenco from Carlos Montoya and a trio of other guitarists. The first half is taken up by pieces performed by the ageless Montoya, and the second half is performed by El Pili, Enrique Montoya, and El Niño de Alicante, along with a dancer adding the jaleos and castanets. Montoya performs excellently, as one would expect given his status in the history of flamenco. Most of the major flamenco guitar forms are covered in his nine tracks, with the exception of some alegrias and bulerias perhaps (and the cante jondo, since he's performing in a purely instrumental capacity here). As a nice excursion into other territories, he also performs variations on a tango theme to quite astounding effect, mixing the two genres into a coherent work. The second half of the album is, perhaps, a little less masterful in the guitar work, but portrays a slightly more traditional rendition of flamenco in its full form, with the soulful vocals taking their place (though they're somewhat quiet in this recording), the jaleos and claps of the other performers, and the castanets and stepping percussion of the dancer all working together to produce a full sound with the guitarists. Overall, it's not a bad album of flamenco at all, though it focuses almost entirely on the guitarists. For a fuller picture of flamenco the way it's meant to be, one should perhaps look up other albums, such as Cante Flamenco or the Rough Guide album devoted to flamenco (which includes some ...
