Can: Michael Karoli (vocals, slide guitar, electric violin, baglama); Irmin Scmidt (vocals, keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass, djun, background vocals); Jaki Liebezeit (drums, percussion, background vocals).
Recorded at Inner Space, Weilerswist, Germany in 1976.
The second of Can's three Virgin albums, 1976's Flow Motion, is a divisive record in the group's canon. It was their most commercially successful album (the opening track, "I Want More," was released as a single in the U.K. and actually charted, thanks to its smoothly percolating near-disco groove, which makes it resemble a late-period Roxy Music hit), but many fans dismiss it as the group's feint toward commercial success. That fluke hit aside, the charge doesn't really hold water. There's a newfound smoothness to the group's interplay, which Holger Czukay attributes to an interest in reggae music, yet the Caribbean influence is quite subtle; only on "Cascade Waltz" and, particularly, "Laugh Till You Cry Live Till You Die" is there a noticeable reggae lilt. The two highlight tracks are "Smoke," a wild, Moroccan-styled entry in their ever-growing Ethnological Forgery Series, and the limber title track, a ten-and-a-half minute instrumental groove that recalls the best moments of earlier albums like Soon Over Babaluma. By no means one of Can's very best albums, Flow Motion deserves better than its poor reputation in some circles. ~ Stewart Mason
1976's FLOW MOTION is probably Can's most immediately accessible album, borne out by the fact that the opening track, "I Want More," was the group's sole chart hit in Britain. The album title is uncannily (sorry) descriptive; this music flows with the sinuous grace of a dancer.
The Stockhausen-influenced repetition that marked their earlier records is still evident here, but Holger Czukay's bass has a new limberness and melodic bent, showing a fresh appreciation of the supple rhythms of reggae and other Carribean musics. Czukay's bass combines with Michael Karoli's headspinning polyrhythms to create a powerful, intoxicating sound. The lengthy instrumental title track is one of the finest performances of Can's long career, with the sinister "Smoke" (part of the group's long-running Ethnological Forgery series of faux world music) and the hypnotic "And More" nearly its equal. The Wire (p.51) - "[Their] hit 'I Want More' benefited from their recently recording equipment and shiny new production sound."

Night Train To Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970
Night Train To Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970 CDs  (2004)

Flow Motion
CD $18.69  Top 500 Audio Samples
Compilation producers: Daniel Cooper, Michael Gray.
Recorded between 1945 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Michael Gray.
Issued to coincide with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's historic exhibit of the same name, this two-CD set is a treasure-trove of hits, misses, rarities, and smoking grooves. Certainly Nash Vegas is the capital of country music, but in its day it also boasted a wealth of stomping rhythm and blues music that flourished in the city for the better part of three decades, until the bulldozers of "urban renewal" destroyed much of its cultural base and forced it from its terrain. With 35 tracks, plus a pair of bonus tracks that are commercials, this set is an affordable, indispensable introduction to a nearly forgotten part of American musical history. The labels represented here are a cross-section of the great regional independents that were so numerous n the '40s, '50s and '60s. Imprints such as Do-Ra-Mi, who recorded Audrey Bryant, Excello, Champion, Sun, Hickory, Bullet, Dial, A-Bet, Elf, and Sound Stage recorded both luminaries and nobodies. Here are early sides by Hank Crawford when he was in a jump band, the wild and wooly Esquerita, Joe Tex, Arthur Alexander, Roscoe Shelton, Joe Simon, Etta James, Johnny Adams, and Christine Kittrell. And there are cuts by cats like Johnny Jones, Nashville's premier blues guitar slinger, Audrey Bryant, the city's Sarah Vaughan, and others who scored big on Nashville radio and ...

I Won't Worry
Danny Morris I Won't Worry CD  (2008)

Flow Motion
CD $18.25
Danny Morris BiographyWhat critics are saying: “Prodigious guitar talent"…"Musically diverse"…“Albert Collins melts strings with a surfin’ Dick Dale"…“Dick Dale meets Stevie Ray.”…“Otis Rush meets the Ventures"…"Magic Slim on a Surfin’ Safari”…"Whammy Surf GOD!"Danny Morris took the blues to the beach. But while strolling the shoreline, the former Nighthawk guitarist picked up a few more genres. Morris incorporates some ska, jazz, flamenco, samba, and '50s rock into his surf-rock sound. Morris developed his R&B chops in Greensboro in the '80s. Then in 1990 he joined the "World's Best Bar Band" The Nighthawks based in Washington, DC. Band leader, and world renowned harmonica player Mark Wenner, had been looking for a guitarist to replace original guitarist Jimmy Thackery, who left in 1987. In 1993 The Nighthawks recorded one of their stellar live performances and the result was the critically acclaimed CD "Rock This House" which features Danny's amazing guitar virtuosity ranging from blues, funk, jazz, and rockabilly. The CD was the follow up for the 1991 release “TROUBLE”. In 1995, Morris decided that he needed more hang time and went out on his own band. The guitarist started his namesake band as a side-project while still with the Hawks, playing around the Virginia/DC area whenever he had time off. The trio was already stretching out from straight-ahead blues. He released his first album in 1996. “I Won't Worry” was a mix of surf, jazz and old-school rock and roll. Two years later, he came out with “Storm Surge”, pushing the envelope even further, bringing onboard a couple of Cuban mixes to add to his now-familiar fusion of blues and surf. Both received high praises from music critics and fans alike. His 2001 release, “The Golden Prize”, mixes ska ("No One Knows Virginia"), samba ("You're Mine," "Our Moon") and '50s era rock ("Twistin’ Kristin") with surf classics like "I Only Have Eyes For You" and "Pipeline". Morris even throws in a little soft-core punk with "All I Think About”. The Beatles get a turn in "Please, Please Me" done as an instrumental with Dick Dale flourishes. Morris finally gets down and dirty with some nasty blues on the closer, "Stop Teasin' Me”, ripping off some pretty tasty, nasty, greasy Texas-style slide with Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers while sax man Jimmy Carpenter blows a sack full of back ...
