Split album
$11.15 Oceanic is the next logical step for Isis after the ugly, grandiose Celestial, the Aaron Turner-led outfit's second full-length looking simultaneously inward and outward, reaching into the nether regions of outer space while still keeping its feet firmly earthbound. Yes, it's an ambitious record, one that isn't immediately consumed and digested -- rather, it consumes and digests the listener with grand and hypnotic waves of sound. Songs blur together as aggressive, post-hardcore guitar riffery trades with lengthy, meditative bouts of electronic exploration, a technique that would result in plodding, pretentious mush in less capable hands. Instead, Oceanic successfully mirrors the dense, unimaginable power of its namesake, combining the minimalist metallic art of Godflesh with the bipolar mood swings and Black Sabbath muscle of West Coast brethren Neurosis. Turner's deathcore ...
| | Red Sparowes At The Soundless Dawn CD (2005)
Split CD music
$14.75 Adjectives like oceanic, atmospheric, and epic are what spring to mind when describing Red Sparowes' debut, At the Soundless Dawn. Their music is all of these things and more. Red Sparowes are often mentioned in the same breath as instrumental bands Isis, Pelican, and Sunn 0))), and while they share influences and have similarities, Red Sparowes go off in a slightly different direction, with metal playing a more subdued role in the sonic architecture. Most of the tracks on At the Soundless Dawn are musical poetry. They are languid and expansive, carrying the listener across vast distances, simulating both the endless unfolding of open road, the gentle rock of waves, and the soaring and plummeting of mountain ranges. Several musical themes are picked up and repeated across the seven album tracks, further strengthening the sense that a coherent story is being told, albeit without words. The track titles, when read as though they were each a line of a poem, provide additional insight into the album's themes and reinforce the storytelling power of the ...
| | Red Sparowes Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun CD (2006)
Split music CDs
$13.09 Instrumentals in metal are nothing new (heck, Metallica used to put one on every record!), but what is a new occurrence is the veritable wave of purely instrumental bands that seem to have spewed out of nothing in the waning years of the first decade of the ol' 21st. Some, like Pelican, are bands that have just simply brushed aside the need for a vocalist, letting guitar parts handle such melodies and harmonies and keeping a basic song structure that is, for the most part, band-driven. Others, like the "guitar collective" that is Tone, are more, well, collective in sound, sort of a wall of music, with guitars layered on top of guitars, all playing the same chord changes to produce something that sounds more like heavy-duty ripples emanating from a common center. If there is one band that manages to capture the grey area that the aforementioned bands create between ...

| | John Mayall Thru The Years CD (1971)
Split music CDs
$8.79 Like its predecessor LOOKING BACK, THRU THE YEARS consists of non-LP
tracks and previously released recordings from Mayall's years with Decca 1964-1968.
A grab bag of rare tracks from the '60s, some of which stand among Mayall's finest. His debut 1964 single "Crawling up a Hill" is one of his best originals; this comp also includes a couple of 1964-65 flipsides that were never otherwise issued in the U.S. The eight songs featuring Peter Green include some top-notch material that outpaces much of the only album recorded by the Green lineup (A Hard Road), particularly the Green originals "Missing You" and "Out of Reach," ...

Split songs
$13.39 After their breakup in 1935 and before they again joined forces in 1953, the brothers Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey only appeared together on very rare occasions: a joint gig in 1939, a V-Disc in 1945 that resulted in "Brotherly Jump," the filming of The Fabulous Dorseys movie in 1946 and the two broadcasts that are included on this ...

| | Daryl Read Freshly Dug CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Split CD music
$15.85 FRESHLY DUG is an album with a remarkable concept. 16 poems by Darryl Read are combined with instrumental tracks written by Ray Manzarek of The Doors.
Devotees of the former Door's keyboard style will surely get a feast on this largely improvised affair, with Darryl Read delivering his own Jim Morrison-styled imagery to Manzarek's electric and acoustic pianos as the mood suits them. The comparisons seem apt on "Man O Jazz," a tribute to New Orleans' music and lifestyle, or the supernatural doings chronicled at "The Magic Tavern," where Manzarek's grand piano sounds truly thunderous. It's not hard to imagine Morrison's ghost rolling ...
