Odd-couple partners Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton spice up the morgue night shift by running a call girl ring. Ron Howard's riotous comedy is about two men--one's a milquetoast, the other is beyond hyperactive--who work the night shift in a morgue. After they become friendly with a sweet streetwalker, the duo decides to start a side venture: prostitution. Soon the guys have become pimps and the funeral parlor has turned into a headquarters for harlots. This early breakthrough comedy by Ron Howard is a rowdy, raunchy surprise from a Hollywood star known more for his wholesome fare. A mismatched pair of New York City morgue workers, hopelessly stuck working the night shift, decide to make a little extra cash during those long, late-night hours--they set up a call-girl service, becoming the funniest love brokers in the Big Apple. Henry Winkler stars as Chuck Lumley, a downtrodden pushover who unhappily endures a whining girlfriend (Gina Hecht) and a dead-end job at the morgue. But after meeting congenial hooker Belinda (Shelley Long), Chuck decides to help her and her friends organize their nightly endeavors. Michael Keaton, in his film debut, steals the movie as Bill Blazejowski, Chuck's manic, crazed assistant at the morgue. Chuck and Bill perfect their new roles as pimps until Chuck's romantic feelings for Belinda cause him to rethink his new career. NIGHT SHIFT was a HAPPY DAYS reunion of sorts for Howard: Former costar Henry Winkler (Arthur Fonzarelli) stars in the film, and HAPPY DAYS producers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel wrote the screenplay. NIGHT SHIFT also marked Howard's first collaboration with his longtime producing partner, Brian Grazer. Night Shift Quotes/Excerpts: "Hey...This guy's dead!"--Bill Blazejowski (Michael Keaton), on his first day on the job at the morgue Night Shift Reviews: "...It's funny, charming and knows how to please an audience....Howard does a nice job of moving the story along and keeping comic pace..."
-- Berg., Variety "...[Keaton] doesn't miss a beat....Even those who find [NIGHT SHIFT] objectionable are liable to laugh..."

SLEEPER OF THE YEAR Trivia time! What do Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Michael Keaton have in common? Give up? They all got their big break playing pimps. Cruise became a teen idol in Risky Business, Freeman was Oscar nominated for a little-seen thriller called Street Smart and Keaton made a major splash with his debut in Night Shift, an comedy about a couple of Manhattan morgue attendants who use their hearses to drive call girls as well as corpses.
This is actually based on a true story but Night Shift isn't going for gritty realism. It's from the same team behind Splash, Parenthood and Ed TV - writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel and director Ron Howard, perhaps the only guys who could have made a feel-good comedy about lovable pimps. I don't mean that as a slight. Ganz and Mandel are great comedy writers and I have a lot of time for Ron Howard, one of the most dependable mainstream film-makers of the last two decades. As well as the comedies mentioned above, he made Cocoon, Backdraft, The Paper, Ransom and A Beautiful Mind, which may not have quite deserved its Oscars but is still a powerful drama.
Making Night Shift, his first major film as director after a handful of TV and exploitation movies, Howard cast his Happy Days co-star Henry Winkler as Chuck Lumley, a timid civil servant a million miles from the Fonz. Chuck is the kind of guy who lets people walk all over him - he's nagged by a self-absorbed fiancee and bullied by an overbearing mother and when his boss re-assigns him to work nights so his lazy nephew can have the day shift, Chuck doesn't have the nerve to argue. Hoping at least for peace and quiet, he's appalled to find himself working with Billy Blazejowski (Keaton), a hyperactive nutcase who considers himself an ideas man and carries a tape recorder to keep track of his thoughts. When Chuck tells Billy about his sweet call-girl neighbour (Shelley Long), who's been in need of protection since her pimp was killed, Billy's solution is turning the mortuary into a part-time escort agency.
The plot summary makes it sound like a crude farce but in fact this is a good-natured human comedy about three people with unhappy lives who find an unconventional way of helping each other. A 1982 release, it's slower paced than most of today's comedies but that's not a bad thing - having recently endured The Tuxedo, where every funny gag is steamrollered by breakneck editing, I found it a blessed relief. There are some big laughs, mostly supplied by Keaton, and a lot of sharp observational humour, much of it at the expense of New York, which is almost as sleazy and hostile here as it was in Taxi Driver.
The film is unquestionably Michael Keaton's show. Keaton is a unique comic talent who has rarely been used to his full potential and Night Shift belongs on a short list of his best work alongside Beetlejuice, Clean And Sober and The Paper. Henry Winkler makes Chuck a sympathetic guy when he could have been annoying and he does a good job playing against his Fonz persona. Likewise Shelley Long, Diane the prim waitress from Cheers, is not many peoples' idea of a hooker but she's sweet and surprisingly sexy and gives her role just enough poignancy to make you care about her and her blossoming relationship with Chuck.
Some more trivia: Drew Barrymore's mother plays one of the hookers and look out for Kevin Costner as a college boy partying in the morgue and a very young Shannen Doherty as a girl scout who attacks Henry Winkler in an elevator.
There are no extras. Menus are static and there are 37 chapter stops. Say what you like about Warner Bros, they don't short-change you on chapter stop.
Night Shift is a terrific comedy which doesn't deserve the semi-obscurity it's fallen into and I see it as my duty as a reviewer to bring little gems like this to your attention. The disc is beret of extras but delivers a solid transfer of the film and you can pick it up for a very reasonable price.

Keaton tour de force Don't miss this one! One of the top 10 funniest movies ever made! Keaton's performance as Billy Blaze is manic and unforgettable. Henry Winkler is deadpan neurotic, and you get to see Shelley Long in her underwear! For you purists, watch closely for the Costner sighting in the frat party scene. When you need a laugh... I was thrilled to find this on DVD-super price, too. It's one of my all-time favorites, and was also the beginning of my love affair with Michael Keaton! Night Shift film
$9.69 Unquestionably the best offering from New York's Riot, Fire Down Under is considered by many to be an early-'80s metal classic. After two marginally successful LPs, 1977's Rock City and 1979's Narita, bandleader Mark Reale worked out all the kinks in Riot's membership and musical delivery, and the results are dramatic. The songs are tight and memorable, the guitars are flashy, and the production is aggressive and slick on this 1981 collection. The group's best and most recognizable tune, "Swords & Tequila," kicks off Fire Down Under with an astonishing power surge. Other standouts include the fast-paced title track, "Outlaw," ...

$9.05 This remastered edition of UFO's 1975 album FORCE IT contains "Let It Roll," "Mother Mary," Shoot Shoot," and more.
If UFO has one addition to rock's pantheon of classic albums, this is it. FORCE IT builds on its predecessor, PHENOMENON, by taking the band further away from their fuzzier, space-rocking early records. Guitarist Michael Schenker's playing has a new ...

| | Thin Lizzy Black Rose: A Rock Legend CD (1979)
Night Shift movie DVD
$9.69 Hard rock quartet formed by Philip Lynott out of Dublin, Ireland. Thin Lizzy had numerous charting albums throughout the 70's & 80's. Black Rose was originally released in 1980. Featured guitarists are Gary Moore & Scott Gorham. 8 tracks. 2001 reissue.
Additional personnel includes: Bluesy Hughie (harp); Jimmy Bain (bass).
Recorded at Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, France and Good Earth Studios, London, England.
Producers include: Tony Visconti, Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott.
Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy's last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy's heavy, dual-guitar attack. Black Rose also turned out to be the band's most musically varied, accomplished, and successful studio album, reaching number two on the U.K. album chart upon release. Lizzy leader Phil Lynott is again equipped with a fine set of originals, which the rest of the band shines on -- the percussion-driven opener "Do Anything You Want To," the pop hit "Waiting for an Alibi," and a gentle song for Lynott's newly born daughter, "Sarah." Not all the material is as upbeat, such as the funky "S&M," as well two grim tales of street life and substance ...
| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Night Shift video
$10.45 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night parties and wild young women in tight dresses. Starz's lyrics, as a rule, were meant to be fun, not profound, and while Violation didn't go down in history as one of pop-metal's all-time classics, it's worth hearing if you're a fan of the style. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Night Shift film
$13.55 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the great but underexposed Budgie. If one didn't know for sure that Firewood was a 2005 recording, it would be easy to assume that the disc was recorded around 1969 or 1970 -- even the production is totally retro. And while Witchcraft's melodic offerings aren't the least bit groundbreaking, they are enjoyable; this derivative outing won't win any awards for originality, although it leaves no doubt that these Swedes are good at what they do. ...
