| | Jose Lugo Orchestra Guasabara CD (2008) With DVD
Hey Arriba! CD music
$12.95 If one thought that the big band flavor of salsa music was dead, GUASABARA is one album that refutes that theory. With a full band assembled in Puerto Rico, tracks like "Mambo Valentin" cross generational lines, bringing an old-school feel to contemporary salsa not heard in many years. Alto saxophones and intricate piano arrangements inject a classy jazz element into performances like "Amnesia" and "Me Voy De Aquí," making GUASABARA as good for listening as it is to dance to.
Bebop may have signaled the end of the swing era, but keyboardist/arranger/producer Jose Lugo is bringing it back with a vengeance. The big band Latino style created by Machito and his Afro-Cubans is something that has disappeared from the scene since the heyday ...

| | Beverly "Guitar" Watkins Back In Business CD (1999)
Hey Arriba! music CDs
$14.49 Beverly "Guitar" Watkins, best known for performing with Piano Red in his outfit Doctor Feelgood and the Interns during the early '60s, returns to active recording with Back in Business, a collection of tracks that finds her comfortably covering electric blues, R&B, and old-fashioned rock & roll. Subtle gospel and jazz shadings appear from time to time, but Watkins generally concentrates on rocking the house, revisiting Piano Red-era classics ...

| | Jacks Why Don't You Write Me CD (1995) (Import) United Kingdom
Hey Arriba! CD music
$16.95 When the Cadets met the Jacks it was an intimate reunion indeed, since they were the same group. The idea was that the group would track uptempo material as the Cadets for the RPM label and handle ballads as the Jacks on the Modern label (with LPs being issued on Crown), all three imprints falling under the Bihari Brothers umbrella. Whatever the group's name (they also recorded as the Rocketeers -- two tracks thus attributed are included here), they were top-notch, one of the best R&B vocal groups the West Coast had to offer ...
| | Evalyn Parry Unreasonable CD (2004)
Hey Arriba! music CDs
$15.05 If this girl (her term, not mine) didn't have a sense of humor, her second album of topical radical lesbian, Canadian environmentalist, antiwar modern singer/songwriter folk music would be downright insufferable. But Evalyn Parry's sense of humor does save her, even if it comes across s a bit strained on such strident fare as "Always" (message: bleached white cotton sanitary pads are a Bad Thing), "Weed Free" (message: chemical lawn treatments are a Bad Thing) and "Profit in the Margins" (message: sympathetic gay characters on TV shows are a Bad Thing, because, you see, they represent the for-profit commodification of what was supposed to be a radical alternative subculture). Other Bad Things include drive-through windows in general and McDonald's in particular, gas stations, the United States. Okay, fine, and maybe she's even right about most of this stuff -- but wouldn't it be fun if, once in a while, she expressed a view that wasn't completely predictable, that didn't make it sound like she's presenting herself for a pat on the head from the Committee for Correct Thinking? On the other hand, "Stone and the Bumblebee" is a downright elegant love song that uses a gentle and elegant image to portray the gritty and often disappointing reality of domestic relationships. So it's not like she isn't capable of doing better. ~ Rick Anderson
