Scottish pop-rock outfit Texas have enjoyed a rich and surprisingly eclectic career. Since their 1989 debut, they have dabbled in blues, R&B, and adult contemporary fare, and even collaborated with Wu-Tang's Method Man. Their 2005 release, RED BOOK, finds the group exploring the myriad strains of electronica. Though Sharleen Spiteri's lilting singing is still at the fore, her voice is manipulated and filtered to fit in with the pulsing electro textures that carry RED BOOK. Fans of the band's earlier records may feel a bit out of place here, but the change in Texas is a refreshing one, and brings a crisp, vital sparkle to their sound.

| | Frank Sinatra Classic Sinatra CD (2000)
Red Book music CDs
$10.55 Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering).
Sinatra's years on the Capitol label (1953-60) were great years. His voice had matured into a powerful and poignant instrument; his sense of swing was infallible; and he was blessed with an innovative and sophisticated arranger, Nelson Riddle, whose charts fit Sinatra like a beautiful suit.
This one-disc compilation of 20 songs includes many classics: "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "The Lady Is a Tramp," In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)." The packaging is attractive (with some great photos of Sinatra) and the digital re-mastering was done right.
Also included are updated versions of songs Sinatra sang in his earlier years ("Oh! Look At Me Now," and "Night and Day"). While this CD is not all-inclusive--some ...

| | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Red Book album
$14.39 The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, but he gets close, and his expressiveness and emotional connection to the song make it shine. The completely old-school Marvin Gaye ballad "Baby I'm for Real" features a duet appearance by Phil Perry. It's convincing and utterly gorgeous. But not only do the covers work here; Downing's originals ...
| | George Benson Songs And Stories CD (2009)
Red Book CD music
$14.39 George Benson's sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it's quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements-his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. SONGS AND STORIES ...
| | Michel Legrand After The Rain CD (1982)
Red Book music CDs
$9.89 This high-quality outing (reissued on CD) features composer Michel Legrand faring quite well as a jazz pianist. He performs six of his compositions (only "Pieces of Dream" is well-known) with a lyrical septet also including altoist Phil Woods (doubling on clarinet), tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, trumpeter Joe Wilder, guitarist Gene Bertoncini, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate. The music generally swings, has plenty of fine melodic solos, and gives listeners a taste of some fresh Legrand material. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in May, 1982.
Personnel: Michel Legrand ...

| | Beans Tomorrow Right Now CD (2003)
Red Book CD music
$13.79 The first release from an Antipop Consortium member following the dissolution of the group, Tomorrow Right Now is a catchy but challenging mix of Beans' almost academic flow and crisp, unlikely samples and electronics. "Phreek the Beat" crosses reggae with simple loops for a disarmingly lo-fi groove; "Mearle" employs ominous drones and freaked-out vocals that are closest to DJ Shadow on his masterpiece Endtroducing; "Crave" is a banger that joyfully pushes the limits with a straight-up rap and beatbox, and "Hot Venom" layers old-school rhymes over tricked out sounds straight out of Aphex Twin and Autechre. With Tomorrow Right Now, Beans proves to be the perfect hip hop artist for Warp Records. Though he's never as instantaneously gratifying as the Streets, the Roots, or Jurassic 5, his efforts to continually defy convention in both production and lyrics -- simultaneously looking forward to electronics and back to days of good rhymes, talent and passion -- make for a rewarding, maybe ...
| | Joyce Cooling This Girl's Got To Play CD (2004)
Red Book music CDs
$11.69 If you're one of those who immediately starts retching when the phrase "smooth jazz" is uttered, you might as well move on right now; there's nothing about the new Joyce Cooling album that won't make you roll your eyes and lunge for the off button. But if you actually enjoy funky jazz with great hooks and propulsive beats and aren't bothered by a nice, glossy sheen, you'll find plenty to enjoy on the latest album by this very fine guitarist, composer, and singer. Her sound isn't especially original -- you'll hear powerful overtones of Wes Montgomery in her solos and of Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton in her production style -- but her writing is inventive and hooky and her playing is expert and stylish. The album's less-than-stellar moments (a rather generic bedroom number called "Take Me There" and the quirky, quasi-autobiographical title track) are still quite enjoyable, and there are plenty of top-notch numbers to counterbalance the less inspired moments. These include the slow and deeply funky "Natural Fact," a fine vocal number called "No More Blues," and the subtly Latin bump of "Wizard." Very nice. ~ Rick Anderson
Recorded at The Clubhouse, San Francisco, California; Werewolf, Oakland, California and PM Studios, Thousand Oaks, California.
Personnel: Joyce Cooling (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Jay Wagner (vocals, soprano saxophone, organ, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Annie Stocking, Nicolas Bearde (vocals, background vocals); Nicholas Beard (vocals); ...
