| | Secret Garden Once In A Red Moon CD (2001)
Meditation music CDs
$10.69 Sometimes during a lunar eclipse, Earth's atmosphere casts the moon in a reddish glow, a lovely space oddity embraced by poets as a symbol of passion, suffering, and the human condition. It's likely that Secret Garden intended to evoke this by naming their album after the phenomenon, since passion and melancholy are in abundance here.
MOON continues the formula that worked so well on their best-selling predecessor, DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY: Celtic-flavored orchestral pieces by pianist/composer Rolf Lovland, featuring Fionnuala Sherry's fervent violin and a series of guest vocalists. "You Raise Me Up" blends the most stirring elements of Celtic and gospel music, and features both a British gospel choir and Irish choral group behind Brian Kennedy's heartfelt vocals. "Greenwaves," with Karen Matheson's honeyed lead vocals, is the most traditional-sounding Irish ballad of Secret Garden's career; its lyrics lament the passing of youth and the loss of dreams. Luckily, the next track, "Invitation," is a flat-out jig that provides some necessary leavening to a largely serious set of songs. Secret Garden manages to convey both sincerity and grandeur in their music, a combination that has won them a huge international following and the respect of critics everywhere.
Additional personnel includes: Karen Matheson (vocals); Julian Lloyd Webber (cello); Irish National Symphony Orchestra.
Producers: Rolf Lovland, Fionnuala Sherry, Andrew Boland.

| | Acoustic Alchemy Arcanum CD (1996)
Meditation album
$10.15 ARCANUM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
Nick Webb and Greg Carmichael, the duo core of Acoustic Alchemy, forego the traditional greatest-hits route by taking an amazingly fresh approach to the concept on their ninth venture Arcanum, which presents the spruced-up live performance evolution of nine old favorites along with three solid new tracks. Yet the best-selling British melodizers even twist the conventions of a typical concert disc by opting to record those takes at England's legendary Pinewood Film Studios, away from the roaring crowds and in the presence of string members of the London Metropolitan Orchestra. The most striking new element is the explosive electric guitar approach of longtime cohort/former producer John Parsons, who adds some staggering zing to the kinetic "Reference Point" and "Casino," while shading in a slightly more subtle manner on the loping "Catalina Kiss" and "Mr. Chow." The strings don't receive a huge workout, but they add new drama and flair to the Western movie themes of "Lazeez" and glamour to the new ballad "Chance Meeting." Those with really keen sonic discrimination will also detect a slightly relaxed tempo on an all-time top Acoustic Alchemy tune, the autobiographical "Same Road Same Reason." AA's ongoing brilliance for creating images by tying together title, rhythm, melody, and mood is the true charm of the disc, and the duo's storytelling abilities are in crisp bloom on the soaring "Columbia," the opening and easily best new track. The piece, inspired by the musicians ...

| | Magna Canta Sanctuary CD (2005)
Meditation CD music
$13.29 On SANCTUARY, Magna Canta blends sleek electronica loops with ecclesiastical chant. Given such titles as "Kyrie" and "Pater Noster," it's clear that Magna Canta is making direct reference to the music of the early Christian liturgy.
Each track on SANCTUARY combines old-world mysticism with ultra-modern sounds. For example, "In Excelsis Deo" uses shimmering keyboards and throbbing percussion together with Gregorian plainsong. Another selection, "Sanctum Christe" employs the same kind of musical juxtaposition. However, on this piece, a piano countermelody allows for chordal movement, thus blurring the lines between the ancient world of monophony and today's harmonic complexities. Other tracks such as "Close to Heaven" and "Celestia Organa" complete this musical picture, as digital sounds become entwined ...
