The Nirvana/Pearl Jam/grunge/Seattle upheaval of the early '90s didn't eradicate '70s/'80s-style metal and hard rock, but it did marginalize them -- and from 1992-1993 on, rockers who weren't alternative in some fashion were considered dated or old school.
