The Swedish black metal band Bathory have won a lot of respect over the years for their uncompromising style of music, and the harsh sound and extreme lyrics of Octagon pack plenty of shock value. A couple of the numbers deal with such serious issues as world politics and pollution, and "Deuce" is probably the most worthwhile track of the lot. Octagon is probably best suited for hardcore Bathory fans. ~ David Peter Wesolowski
The Swedish black metal band Bathory have won a lot of respect over the years for their uncompromising style of music. However, a little bit of compromise would have gone a long way on this particular release. Even seasoned metal fans might find Octagon tough to digest. Sure, its harsh sound and extreme lyrics pack plenty of shock value. But most of the tunes are too chaotic, failing to make any sort of a connection even after a good number of spins. In fact, several of them are downright painful. A couple of the numbers try to deal with such serious issues as world politics and pollution, but their message is lost amidst all that chaos and noise. "Deuce" is probably the most worthwhile track of the lot, but that doesn't mean it's anything special. No doubt about it, Octagon is one for the hardcore Bathory fans. ~ David Peter Wesolowski

| | Def Leppard Pyromania CDs (1983) Bonus CD; Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Octagon CD music
$19.59 Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone).
The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'," as well as a couple of other tracks that could have easily been singles as well, "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" and "Too Late for Love." PYROMANIA remains one of the best and most popular hard-rock recordings ...
| | Future Sound Of London Accelerator CD (1991)
Octagon music CDs
$12.39 Compared to where most of the band's career would later go, Accelerator is a fairly conventional debut from the duo -- certainly it's the most explicitly commercial-minded the duo ever was, slotting in well with many other early-'90s U.K. dance/techno outfits. As such it's also arguably the least cryptic and most approachable release for newcomers, holding up well a decade after its original appearance. Rather than focusing on ambient experimentalism or industrial noise destruction, here Future Sound of London sound like a straightforward if at times inspired act, whose tendencies to push the envelope are secondary to keeping the beat going. The main reason to listen remains its awesome single "Papua New Guinea," blending a treated vocal sample from Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard with a slightly sped-up James Brown drum loop and other, more shadowy touches like echoed piano. The result combines exaltation, energy, and atmosphere into a dramatic result, as danceable as it is subtly threatening. At various points on Accelerator, FSOL show an inspired focus on breakbeats as much as acid pulses; while nowhere near as frenetic as other early hardcore/jungle creations, the music clearly leans towards those records in inspiration. "Expander," which also appears in a remix at the end, makes for a good start for the album ...
| | D A D No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims CD (1989) Import
Octagon songs
$22.25 No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims was an outstanding international debut from Danish rockers D:A:D, following two promising efforts on the European Mega label. Irresistible lead-off single "Sleeping My Day Away" combined a rhythm guitar straight out of the AC/DC handbook, spiced by melody lines performed with a country-ish, '50s-style guitar twang -- a unique formula that the band successfully applied to other standouts like "Point of View" and "Lords of the Atlas." "Rim of Hell" is a stomping party anthem riding a monstrous, mid-paced groove, and the band also rocks out full-throttle on "Jihad," "True Believer," and the almost Metallica-heavy "Ill Will." And even though their command of the English language is hardly perfect (it's rather sketchy, actually), D:A:D transform a potential negative into a glowing positive by taking fearless
poetic license with their lyrics. The results are often clever and always hilarious, as heard on "Siamese Twin" (sample lyric: "She's two of a kind and she's mine") and "Girl Nation" ("Bad bush and dangerous curves -- a female civilization"), among others. Why this record didn't become a huge smash is anyone's guess, but fans of raw, honest, hard rock simply can't go wrong with No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
After their first two Country-Punk-albums Call Of The Wild and D.A.D Draws A Circle the Danes, formerly Disneyland After Dark, handed out a killer titled No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims, which is just plain fun, no arguments about that. Already the opener 'Sleeping My Day Away' is to this very day a classic in Rock-pubs and has made D.A.D. immortal. Just like on the follow-up 'Riskin' It All' the two Binzer-brothers create rather simple, but so very effective songs, which are directly going into your blood and legs, without any detour, ...
