While Coal Chamber's self-titled debut album doesn't sound all that original (White Zombie and Korn are obvious touchstones), they are certainly one of the better bands in the so-called alternative metal genre. Their sound is noisy and powerful, they seem to approach the music with strong emotional commitment, and B. Dez Fafara's vocals are appealingly left-of-center. The Virginia Ramblers (visit us at virginiaramblers.com) members, IBMA, are a traditional bluegrass band from Albemarle County, Virginia. Though we're new, the group has a good deal of musical experience: three of us (Charles Frazier, guitar and lead singer, Donnie Shifflett, bass, and Jeff Vogelgesang, mandolin) have worked together for 13 years as members of the Virginia Cutups. "Cherishing Memories" is the last cd recorded by the Virginia Cutups, who performed traditional bluegrass music for over twenty years. Breeden's banjo playing reincarnates Don Reno up and down the neck, with a healthy spice of Stanley rolls fingered into the mix. His work on "Pretty Polly," which we've all heard a thousand times, transforms it into a fresh, wild thing. He's also an excellent lead guitarist, as his breaks on "My Soul He'll Save" and "One Tear Drop" attest.
