This is my favorite pestilence cd, sure its not as brutal as consuming impulse or technical as testimony but sort of a nice balance. The demo material is what really sells this for me. The 1st demo dysentery from 1987 sees a pure thrash attack with underground production and a vocal delivery that will bring to mind possessed, more like beyond the gates then seven churches though. There is a very loose feeling in the playing which is most apparent in the drums, you could hear stick clicks and screw ups, there few and far between but they are in there. demo 2 is called penance from 1988 with actually worse production! But i think it fits well, this is where you could hear more of a death metal sound creep into the songs. I think its the better of the two, the riffs just seem betterto me on this demo especially the first one in 'before the penance'. Something must be said about the vocals though they suck, like spoken word with a high pitched scream thrown in randomly. I'll deal with it just because the material is so good on this demo.
