Stainless album
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more ...
| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
Stainless CD music
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks ...

$5.75 In the tradition of bands such as Metallica and Judas Priest, Pantera put themselves on the map with supercharged blues-based metal riffs and screaming/singing vocals. Adding groove to their artistic aggression made COWBOYS FROM HELL a landmark for the band.

| | Britny Fox Long Way To Live! CD (2000)
Stainless music CDs
$10.19 Due to membership upheavals and the genocide of hair metal, you're messing with a leaner, meaner son of a Britny Fox on the quartet's first live disc. Opening strong with a Dirty Harry sound bite, "Six Guns Loaded" and quasi-smash "Long Way to Love," diminutive Johnny-come-lately frontman Tom Paris holds the crowd with his funny and cool stage patter (naturally relying on a common four-letter colloquialism). He tucks the Fox chestnut "Dream On" into Supertramp's glittering "Give a Little Bit" (long before the Gap commercial). The band still subsists on those early tracks somehow, but many songs come from the charmingly titled Bite Down Hard, and the boys whip up a metal maelstrom by mid-show with "Closer to Your Love" and "Black and White." Obviously a very visual assemblage, Britny Fox turns out a sonically satisfying live work, admirable simply because of the band's survival. Billy Childs is an amiable bassist who looks like C.C. DeVille's mellow older brother (If you don't know who C.C. is, why are you reading?) and acoustically opens "Over and Out" (not the Drill song), which starts like "Find Your Way Back" (the Jefferson Starship song). Drummer Johnny Dee's solo is wisely omitted, as these are aural wastes, live or on disc. German guitarist ...

| | Ritual CD (2004) Remastered
Stainless CD music
$14.49 Released in Europe by Musea in 2000 and reissued worldwide by InsideOut four years later, this is Ritual's debut album -- and the word "debut" has rarely sounded so meaningless. This is already a full-fledged, mature, and technically impressive band, playing and singing with a lot of passion. The Scandinavian folk/medieval current that would all but disappear by the third album underpins every single song here, the violin of guest Lotta Hasselquist adding an even stronger folk flavor to four key tracks. If the music already presents the hard-rocking progressive rock tendency that will award the group a contract with InsideOut, it is nevertheless much lighter and funnier. Tracks like "Wingspread," "Solitary Man," and "Big Black Secret" are heavy-pounding numbers, but the spirit of the album resides more in "power folk" songs like "The Way of Things," "Life Has Just Begun," "Dependence Day," and the delightful "Seasong for the Moominpappa," the first in a series of Ritual songs based on author Tove Jansson's character. "The Way of Things" and "Life Has Just Begun" are typical King Arthur-related songs and would be rather quaint if it weren't for their catchy melodies, clever arrangements, and Patrik Lundström's fabulous singing -- one of the best power singers of the early 2000s. "Dependence Day" is the album's highlight: concise, catchy despite its dense arrangements, uplifting. "A Little More Like Me" features weaker lyrics, but has a distinct Gentle ...

$14.65 Two discs of 1972-1977 BBC performances by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with excellent sound are collected on this set, though it's not quite as lengthy as you might assume, adding up to about an hour and a half in all (with only about half an hour on the second disc). There aren't great surprises in store for those familiar with Harvey's BBC work during this, his commercial ...
