Modern Masquerades album
$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session is the document. What is truly amazing about this hookup is how natural these ...

Modern Masquerades music CDs
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined ...
| | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005)
Modern Masquerades songs
$17.75 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Modern Masquerades album
$17.79 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, ...

| | Courtney Pine Devotion CD (2004)
Modern Masquerades songs
$15.65 From the jump, Pine goes into interstellar overgroove. After a kung fu movie intro wedded to sound effects, he kicks it with "Sister Soul," a blistering funky soul-jazz track that pushes all the right buttons with its low-down swagger and Pierre's eight-string glissando guitars. The title track is uptempo rocker's reggae (which bleeds well into the ska zone), on which Pine plays baritone saxophones and bass clarinet. He makes the dread beat dance with jazz dissonance and harmonics; the groove is deep, dirty, and lusty. In his solo, Pine honks like a bar walker and steams like Archie Shepp circa 1969, but it's all him. Other notables include the post-bop jazz meets Afro-funk of "Osibisa," a tribute to the pioneering African band of the same name from the 1970s, and the shimmering East Indian groove of "Translusance," with guest sitarist Sheema Mukherjee from Transglobal Underground and tabla star Yousuf Ali Khan. When Pine and Mukherjee trade fours and play harmonic counterpoint, the effect is dazzling. Other killer cuts include the stomping instrumental Northern soul strut of "U.K." and the snake-hipped, finger-popping, scratchadelic groove jazz of "Everything Is Everything." There are also a couple of fine vocal numbers. First there ...

| | Brandon Carter South Side Bravado CD (2007)
Modern Masquerades songs
$16.45 Brandon Carter was born and raised on Chicago's South Side. It was tough for Brandon growing up in the inner-city. His neighborhood was filled with gangs, drugs, and often the scene of murders. Brandon attended public schools where fights were a daily occurrence and more than once, Brandon saw teachers beaten up by students right in front of his eyes. Brandon became a product of this environment; he frequently ran with local gangs and was involved in petty crime. Brandon's parents were afraid that South Side streets were get the best of him, so during high school, Brandon's parents opted to send him to Military School. The Military School Brandon attended was an extremely strict environment, similar to a juvenile delinquents center. He was told when to eat, sleep, and what to do 24 hours a day. Brandon had to live at the Military school and was only allowed to go back to his beloved 'South Side' one weekend a month. No family members or friends were allowed to visit Brandon at school. There was no Television, no decent food, no girls, and no weed to smoke. The only thing that Brandon had to ease the unyielding agony of this hellish and depressing situation was MUSIC. Brandon could only seek refuge in music because his radio was the only personal item he was allowed to keep at school. He started to play drums in his down time. Which would become extremely useful to him in years to come. Had it not been for music as a release for him at school, Brandon would have surely found himself using his boxed up energy towards something negative. It became apparent to Brandon that Military school may have also saved his life because many of the friends that Brandon had prior to Military school are now dead, in jail and/or straight up losers. After graduating, Brandon attended Howard university ...
