| | Ventures Batman CD - Import Ventures Discography of CDs
The Ventures Play the "Batman" Theme looks like a crass record company attempt to cash in on the hits of the moment, then knocks you flat like a bottle of Thunderbird in a plain brown paper bag. A sure sign of a great Ventures record is an inordinate amount of original compositions, and The Ventures Play the "Batman" Theme has eight, with every one of them a winner. "Zocko," "Joker's Wild," and "Vampcamp" are classic Ventures stompers, with near-raunchy guitar lines, stops, starts, and fabulous drumming by Mel Taylor. Television spy themes were tailor-made for the Ventures' sound, and their versions nearly outshine the originals. The production is in full The Ventures in Space mode: maniacal laughs appear and disappear, eerie sounds and strange noises abound, and the songs are tightly arranged. At their creative peak, the Ventures could take the hokiest of concepts and make them interesting, as this album bears witness. ~ Kurt Edwards
See For Miles reissued two of the Ventures' television-oriented records, Batman and TV Themes, on on CD in 1997. The Batman Theme was released during the mid-'60s, and it contains a selection of contemporary TV themes and spy songs, including their minor hit version of "Secret Agent Man." While there are enjoyable moments, the group can't sustain momentum throughout the course of the record. Although it's not perfect, TV Themes is a bit more coherent and enjoyable. Released in 1977, the album finds the Ventures running through 12 familiar themes from the late '60s and '70s: "Charlie's Angels," "Medical Center," "Star Trek," "Starsky & Hutch," "Baretta's Theme," "Hawaii Five-O, ' "S.W.A.T.," "M*A*S*H," and "Nadia's Theme (The Young and the Restless)." It's not a great record, but it's fun, especially for listeners who try to find kitsch in everything. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Lady Gaga Fame CD (2008)
Batman CD music
$9.99 The times were crying out for a pop star like Lady GaGa -- a self-styled, self-made shooting star, one who mocked the tabloid digital age while still wanting to wallow in it -- and one who's smart enough to pull it all off, too. That self-awareness and satire were absent in the pop of the new millennium, where even the best of the lot operated only on one level, which may be why Lady GaGa turned into such a sensation in 2009: everybody was thirsty for music like this, music for and about their lives, both real and virtual. To a certain extent, the reaction to The Fame may have been a little ...

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Batman songs
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and ...

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Batman CD music
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss ...

| | Carpenters Perform Carpenter CD (2003)
Batman songs
$12.65 Those who listened to the Carpenters during their heyday without paying attention to those names that appear in parenthesis after song titles might not be aware of a musical development that took place during the group's career. As time went on, Richard Carpenter became a more significant source of the Carpenters' songs as a writer. Richard was contributing to the songwriting at the outset, for example placing "All of My Life" and "Eve" on the debut album, Offering (aka Ticket to Ride) in 1969. But it wasn't until 1972 that "Goodbye to Love" (co-written with John Bettis) gave him his first representation as a writer on the A-side of a Carpenters single. When that song peaked at number seven on the Hot 100, Richard began putting more of his songs out as Carpenters singles, and he scored further hits with "Yesterday Once More," "Top of the World," "Only Yesterday," and "I Need to Be in Love." But his songs were still mixed in with many outside contributions, such that the Carpenters' musical legacy remains a combination of his writing and that of many others. A quarter-century later, as A&M looked for further ways to exploit the Carpenters catalog, the idea of assembling a compilation devoted to Richard's compositions was a valid one, and the tracks here mix his hits with a selection of the many album tracks he wrote. The collection presents the Carpenters at their most natural-sounding; Richard was writing for Karen Carpenter's voice, so the songs effectively ...

| | Gentle Giant CD (1970)
Batman CD music
$16.29 A prog rock classic, this is Gentle Giant's 1970 debut album.
Astonishingly daring debut album, not as focused or overpowering as King Crimson's first but still crashing down barriers and steamrolling expectations. The mix of medieval harmonies and electric rock got stronger on subsequent albums, but the music here is still pretty jarring. Kerry Minnear was probably the only prog rock keyboard player of the era who allowed his synthesizers to sound like themselves and not mimic orchestras; Gary Green's guitars are alternately loud and brittle or soft and lyrical, and always surprising; and the presence of saxes and trumpets (courtesy of Phil Shulman) was unusual in any rock band of the era -- all of which explains how Gentle Giant managed to attract a cult following but hadn't a prayer of moving up from that level of recognition. "Funny Ways" was the softest prog ...
