THE LIFE PURSUIT makes it appear as if Scottish twee-popsters Belle & Sebastian have no intention of retreating to the fey, boy-in-the-bubble acoustic vulnerability of their first few albums. The preceding DEAR CATASTROPHE WAITRESS found uberproducer Trevor Horn giving the group a widescreen big-pop sound, and while THE LIFE PURSUIT isn't quite as cinematic, it retains a fair amount of that agreeable pop gloss, nudging the tempos slightly, tightening up the rhythm section, and turning up the keyboards--not surprising, since production is handled by Air/Beck vet Tony Hoffer. The most noticeable difference, however, is that B&S have apparently been loading T. Rex and P-Funk onto their iPods: a few of the tunes find the formerly fragile ensemble making a concerted effort to incorporate 1970s funk and chugging glam rock into their sound. Impressively, these stylistic leaps actually work, broadening the band's sound even as the quirky songwriting that fans have come to love remains winningly idiosyncratic ("Funny Little Frog," "Sukie in the Graveyard") and satisfyingly solid.

Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. The Discovery date was recorded when Robinson was already 51 and found him returning to jazz after a 30-year absence from full-time activity. When you've already recorded a hundred albums, what to do you do for an encore? In the case of polka meister Jimmy Sturr, you start up the second half of your recording career with an even blend of instrumentals and vocals, including two vocals sung in Polish. This is also the rootsiest album Sturr has recorded in quite some time and, with the exception of guest shots from Flaco Jimenez and polka vet Arlene Crisson, the focus is squarely on Sturr and his topflight outfit, working these old tunes over like a well-oiled, but very swinging, machine. This is not only well-played music, but also music performed with a sincerity and an enthusiasm lacking in other forms of popular music today, which may go a very long way in explaining why this is album number 101 for this bandleader. Ayumi Hamasaki belongs to the top tier of Japanese musicians who find it almost impossible to do something below a certain level, so it's not really surprising that Secret is a competent album with immense charting power. However, while it excels in production and does well in the fun department, its artistic merit is ambiguous (though that doesn't equal "bad"). Being the product of Hamasaki's J-rock period, Secret does feature a lot of guitar playing, but the riffs usually just follow the general direction that the songs take, and that can be pretty much everything from classic hard rock and piano ballads to industrial-lite numbers, ABBA-styled disco, and Euro-dance adaptations (the latter two being especially prominent). The only constants besides guitar lines are techno beats, background synths, and Hamasaki's singing, which is so steadily heartfelt it sounds calculated -- but there's always plenty of other things in the mix, from acoustic breaks and children's choruses to strings and new age keyboards.
