WATERLOO TO ANYWHERE is Carl Barat's first post-Libertines album, and features his brand-new band. Well, his sort-of-new band. In Dirty Pretty Things, he is joined by former Libertines drummer Gary Powell, and by guitarist John Rossomando and bassist Didz Hammond, both of whom played with the Libertines on tour. So they are to a large extent a continuation of the Libertines, without tabloid fixture Pete Doherty.
Perhaps because the creative controls are in one person's hands, the album rings with a signature sound, filtering tuneful melodies that range from ska to sea shanty through unfastidious, slashing guitars. The bass hits like a ray gun set on pulse, and the drums keep it all from spinning out of control, but only just. The album begins with "Deadwood," a hyperkinetic vamp that swings on a set of grimy riffs. "The Gentry Cove" sets a folk melody over ska rhythms, while "The Enemy" is a mid-tempo rocker that contains some of Barat's finest songwriting. On one level it seems to be an angry song about the breakup of his former band, but the song concludes with the almost whispered lines, "All you need's a gentle heart / To see you through the endless dark."

| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Waterloo To Anywhere songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like ...

| | Brian Jonestown Massacre Bringing It All Back Home - Again CD (1999)
Waterloo To Anywhere music CDs
$9.79 The ever-prolific Brian Jonestown Massacre takes a detour onto the Which label for a six-song, half-hour affair that stands in stark contrast to their usual sprawling opuses. The sound of Bringing It All Back Home Again is comparable to that of their previous Thank God for Mental Illness -- mostly acoustic and country-tinged, reminiscent (as the title suggests) of the period when Bob Dylan was making the transition from acoustic to electric material, as well as the sort of country shuffles that popped up on some Rolling Stones ...
