Herbie Hancock 1+1 CD (1997)
Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions CD music "Aung San Suu Kyi" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.
Individually, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter's careers have been among the most innovative and influential in jazz, and their collaborative efforts are considered some of their most important work. As early as their tenure in the legendary Miles Davis quintet of the 1960s the two have cultivated an unusually long-standing and fruitful musical relationship. On 1+1, Hancock and Shorter share their extraordinary musical talents in an intimate duo setting.
The rapport these two musicians have developed is apparent throughout this beautifully conceived album. Hancock's piano colorations blend perfectly with the unsurpassed expressiveness and warmth of Shorter's soprano saxophone. The ten compositions on 1+1 (nine of which were penned by Hancock and/or Shorter) provide an exceptional amount of freedom for the two improvisers. The performances are characterized by subdued, introspective explorations. Brief virtuosic flourishes are balanced by a dramatic use of space. Even the slightly funk-tinged "Hale-Bopp, Hip Hop" is a subtle performance with shifting meters and complex rhythmic underpinnings.

Dollar Brand / Archie Shepp Duet CD (1978)
Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions album for sale A somewhat surprising pairing at the time, the former firebrand of the tenor sax and the wonderful South African pianist found a pleasant and relaxed meeting point. By 1978, Shepp had largely abandoned the ferocious attack that gained him renown in the '60s, settling on a rich, Ben Webster-ish tone and playing a repertoire consisting of modern standards and bluesy originals. Two such pieces, the lovely Dave Burrell/Marion Brown composition "Fortunato" and Mal Waldron's "Left Alone," are highlights of this session, Shepp's burnished tone as soft as an old shoe. Ibrahim is a fairly deferential partner here, generally preferring to play the role of accompanist, although certainly one sprinkling his work with plenty of ideas for Shepp to work off. But the prevailing sense of relaxation begins to pall after a while and one wishes for a bit more of the old rough and tumble that these two were surely capable of. Still, for those who enjoyed Shepp's mid-'70s dates for Arista/Freedom and Ibrahim's more subdued group efforts of the late '70s and early '80s, there's much good listening here. ~ Brian Olewnick

Swirlies They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons CD (1996)
Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions buy CD music On their second full-length album They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons, the Swirlies show again why they're so aptly named. From "In Her Many New Found Freedom" to "The Vehicle Is Invisible," the band's songs float, hover, threaten to fall apart, and, yes, swirl. Though much of the Swirlies' lineup changed between this album and their excellent 1992 debut album, Blonder Tongue Audio Baton, their trademark mix of samples, sweet vocals, and noisy drums and guitars remains pretty much intact. While songs like "Sounds of Sebring," "San Cristobal de las Casas," and "Two Girls Kissing" present their more focused, accessible side, "No Identifier," "You Can't Be Told It, You Must Behold It," and "Boys, Protect Yourselves from Aliens" use plenty of buzzing synths, loops, and Speak & Spells to make more experimental noise. A noisy, sonically interesting album, They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons may not be straightforward, but the eddies and dips in the Swirlies' sound are more than worth a listen. ~ Heather Phares

Mandukhai Ensemble / Various Artists Air Mail Music: Mongolia CD (1998)
Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions songs The Mandukhai Ensemble is a well-known ensemble that specialized in traditional Mongolian singing, the music of that people being mainly vocal. Mongolia developed with Tuvan people what is called throat singing (also called diphonic or overtone singing). Among both people, throat singing is called Khuumii. This name is originally a Mongolian word. They even share some folk songs. You can hear different styles of songs (short and long songs and song with throat singing) on this CD, as well as solo pieces and dances. The main Mongolian musical instruments are the following: the limbe (a transverse flute), the syanz (a three-string lute), the yoocin (a dulcimer), the dörbön utas-tai huur (a four-string fiddle), as well as some percussion. Mongolian music at its best. ~ Bruno Deschênes

A Lesser Mensa Dance Squad CD (2001)
Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions album for sale There are those who are extremely serious about their experimental music. Po' faced elitists who want nothing to do with music if there's a hook, riff, or even a beat to grasp onto. And then there's Jay Lesser, who, like the academics, is seemingly focused only on pushing the boundaries of what people's ears and attitudes will tolerate. The difference is that Lesser is laughing his ass off. A mini-album to follow-up Gearhound, Lesser's debut for indie/mainstream margin walkers Matador, Mensa Dance Squad, is a perfect fit for the IDM imprint Tigerbeat6, sitting comfortably next to smartass releases by label owner Kid606 and Cex. Yet at the same time, the album's title, along with the statement "Intelligence should be used for the benefit of humanity," printed on the cover, berates the self-styled intellectual crowd that purchases these types of releases. And there's the rub. While most experimental artists are thoughtful in their pursuits (never mind the thousands of other, overly sincere musicians in this world), Lesser's refusal to stand up for anything becomes irritating very quickly. True, there can be a certain fascination with the process he uses: cutting, chopping, and distorting the digital output to a hyper-stylized epileptic seizure. And occasionally, on tracks like "Drop It on The," there might even be a slight sense of musicality in the dub clicks and machine shudders. But for the most part, you get the feeling that Lesser has put himself in that ultra-sarcastic position where he can feel super-smarter than you, but will immediately switch to prankster fool when his integrity is challenged. So just because he boldly uses contorted hip-hop samples, and completely defrags Faith No More's classic hit, "Epic" on "Epic Act/Awful Way to Go"," don't assume Lesser to be a razor-sharp pop-culture surgeon. Only when juxtaposed against an artist's more conventional work do the experimental exercises gain credibility. ~ Joshua Glazer
