If Comets on Fire is the soundtrack to a midnight psychedelic bacchanalia, then COF frontman Ethan Miller's side project, Howlin' Rain, is the house band for the next afternoon's stoned soul picnic. The band's 2006 self-titled debut is made up of eight extended classic-rock workouts that recall Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Allman Brothers, and Humble Pie at their jubilant peak. While Howlin' Rain can choogle with the best of them, there's a charming, wide-eyed buoyancy to the songs that sets the band apart from the more menacing stoner-rockers of the early '00s.

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn't seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog.
