Pianist Frank Kimbrough delivers more of his deeply introspective, harmonically complex jazz on Play. Working with a trio, Kimbrough is supported here by the adept bassist Masa Kamaguchi and drummer Paul Motian. A phenomenal pianist, Kimbrough's mix of Thelonious Monk's cubist bumptiousness and Bill Evans' impressionistic colorations is thoroughly modern and prefigures the work some of his younger, more ballyhooed contemporaries, like Brad Mehldau and Jacky Terrasson. Moving from tumbling ballads to playful waltzes and enigmatic modal pieces, Kimbrough has crafted a challenging, atmospheric, and subtle album that makes the most of his sensitive group's interplay. ~ Matt Collar

Frank Kimbrough has been a valuable pianist based in the New York area ever since the early '80s. On this CD he is teamed with bassist Ben Allison (who along with Kimbrough co-founded the Jazz Composers Collective and the Herbie Nichols Project) and drummer Matt Wilson. The Buzz on experimental-minded bassist Ben Allison is all good, as (among numerous accolades) he'd been cited by Downbeat Magazine as one of "25 rising jazz stars for the future" and was selected in various categories in its critics poll as a talent deserving wider recognition. Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff didn't co-lead a studio date until 1986, when Bob Porter (one of the top producers in the soul-jazz field) produced their Soul Survivors album for Milestone. But alto saxman Crawford and organist McGriff should have recorded together long before that because they have so much in common. Both are soul-jazz/hard bop heavyweights, and both thrive on jazz that is funky, earthy, blues-drenched, and quite accessible; as a rule, blues and R&B lovers who don't care for the more abstract, cerebral styles of jazz have no problem getting into Crawford or McGriff. And they will have no problem getting into this fine collection, which offers a 75-minute sample of material that the veteran improvisers recorded as co-leaders from 1986-1998. Everything on The Best of Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff was produced by Porter, who has produced countless soul-jazz sessions over the years. So not surprisingly, this 2001 release is full of state-of-the-art soul-jazz. Crawford and McGriff enjoy a strong rapport whether they are getting into hard-swinging up-tempo fare on "One Mint Julep" (a major hit for Ray Charles in 1961) and Lester Young's "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" or lyrical ballad playing on "Second Time Around" and "Because of You." None of the material is groundbreaking; in the '80s and '90s, Crawford and McGriff excelled by sticking with the type of down-home stuff they had been embracing since the '50s. In the Land of Oo-Bla-Dee is a fine collection of rarities from the obscure and underrated tenor saxophonist Allen Eager. Eager had a wild career that began with him recording for Savoy in the '40s and later found him dropping out with Timothy Leary and jamming with the Mothers of Invention. This disc features Eager's always swinging sound in a variety of settings. First off are three tracks recorded in 1953 at the Hi Hat in Boston featuring Symphony Sid as the MC. Next is a very lo-fi version of Eager's own high-charged original composition "Some Blues" recorded in 1949 for CBS's Adventures in Jazz program. The song has some typically loud drumming from Buddy Rich that can't obscure Eager's fine soloing. Next up are tracks recorded at what sound like impromptu jam sessions at photographer Milton Greene's studio in 1947. There are three different sessions represented here, the first session resulted in two songs, including "Serge Swings Allen's Axe," with the similarly underrated and forgotten baritone saxist Serge Chaloff fooling around with Eager's tenor. The next session yielded three songs and this time featured Chaloff's lush playing on the baritone sax, resulting in some fine takes on Al Cohn's "The Goof and I" and the jazz standard "Fine and Dandy." The third session is an all-star session with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Max Roach on hand. The first track, "Swapping Horns," lives up to its title as Parker and Eager actually switch horns, putting Bird on tenor and Eager on alto. They also play the same song and call it "Original Horns," with Parker on alto and Eager on tenor. In between those two tunes is a moody version of "All the Things You Are" featuring Parker and Powell but not Eager.
