John Ellis is best known for being the saxophonist with guitarist Charlie Hunter, although his own solo career has been going well. On By a Thread, Ellis' music (all nine selections are his originals) has its own quirky logic, like that of Wayne Shorter, although his compositions are also reminiscent of the Keith Jarrett Quintet of the '70s when it featured tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman. The music is part blues and part gospel but also utilizes unusual structures and is consistently unpredictable. Aaron Goldberg (mostly on electric piano) and guitarist Mike Moreno have their solo spots, but John Ellis is the main star, both in his writing and in his distinctive playing. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Down Beat (p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Ellis delves deep into extended harmony, bobbing and weaving between the colors laid down by Goldberg and guitarist Mike Moreno, and the ensemble delivers smooth post-bop unison lines..." $21.19 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar ...
