| | Klaus Schulze Irrlicht CD Klaus Schulze Discography of CDs
Personnel includes: Klaus Schulze (keyboards). Liner Note Author: Albrecht Piltz. Recording information: Berlin, Germany (04/1972). Translators: Markus Schurr; Matt Goodluck. Schulze's solo debut is a masterful album featuring some of the most majestic instances of space music ever recorded, all the more remarkable for being recorded without synthesizers. "Satz Gewitter," the first of two tracks and the highlight here, slowly progresses from oscillator static to a series of glowing organ lines, all informed by Schulze's excellent feel for phase effects. ~ John Bush A founding member of such notable Krautrock ensembles as Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Cosmic Jokers, Klaus Schulze is genuinely deserving of the oft-assigned "father of modern electronic music" title. The drummer-turned-master-of-a-million-synthesizers did not remain with any single unit for very long. Instead, Schulze embarked on a bewilderingly prolific solo career that seeded the fertile paths of new age, ambient, trance, and techno music. 1972's IRRLICHT is where it all begins. Over three lengthy tracks, saturnine string motifs are pitted against surging drone and sheeting downpours of synthetic organ. It's a dense, often blisteringly dissonant clash of orchestral crescendos and synthesizer swells with little in the way of conventional melody, but texture and tonal complexity to burn. "Satz Ebene" sounds like one of Bach's magisterial pipe-organ works performed on a distant planet's barren surface. "Satz Gewitter" is a harrowing coda fortified with sci-fi sonics. The contemplative "Satz Exil Sils Maria" encroaches like a lunar dusk as Schulze slowly draws a curtain of cosmic shadow over the event horizon. $18.05 This re-release of a classic Klaus Schulze album has some little differences from the formerly available CD version. The former CD of "X." was altered in sound (not to everybody's delight) and some tracks were a bit shorter as on the original vinyl album. Therefore, the music used for this re-release was carefully transferred from original old analogue master tapes to digital equipment. And for those listeners who have already everything of Klaus Schulze, there is a remarkable concert version of "Ludwig", played in September 1978 during a concert by KS together with a classical orchestra of young people, as bonus track.

Irrlicht
$14.29 Personnel: Klaus Schulze (organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Haraold Grobkopf (drums). Recorded at Studio P-anne-Paulsen, Frankfurt, Germany. As one of the original members of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze certainly blazed some important trails on the virgin terrain of early-1970s electronic music--trails that would grow wide enough to accommodate millions of travelers throughout the '80s, '90s, 2000s, and beyond, and encompass everything from New Age and ambient music to drone and chill-out techno. The same commitment to innovation ...

Irrlicht
$14.59 Personnel: Ulli Schober (percussion). Liner Note Authors: Albrecht Piltz; Klaus D. Mueller. Recording information: Hambuhren (03/1985-08/1985). Photographer: Klaus D. Mueller. Translator: Markus Schurr. Inter*Face is a disappointment. Klaus Schulze combines Berlin school electronica with rock & roll textures better than most. He does so on this album and he also incorporates some (ouch!) disco beats. There are four tracks on this CD. The first three -- about half the disc -- are run ...

$18.19 For over a quarter century, Japan's Kitaro has been an internationally recognized icon and globally acclaimed composer and musician. Influenced early on by American rock and R&B, Kitaro began experimenting with synthesizers and a rainbow of unconventional sounds in the mid-'70s. His pioneering fusion of electronic artistry, traditional Japanese forms, and pop-inflected Western idioms created a lush, harmonic, and poetic sound that won the now legendary artist a huge international following. 1980's Volume 1 in the revered Silk Road series is considered an all-time ...

Irrlicht
$21.05 Collection of Columbia label 1955 to 1970 evolving era recordings. 10 tracks.
CIRCLE IN THE ROUND contains alternate takes and previously unreleased material spanning Miles Davis' acoustic bands of the 1950s through his electric bands of the early '70s. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, chimes, bells); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); John Coltrane, Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet); Herbie Hancock (acoustic & electric pianos, celeste); Joe Zawinul (piano, keyboards); Red Garland, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly (piano); Chick Corea (electric piano, keyboards); Joe Beck, George Benson (electric guitar); Khalil Balakrishna (sitar); Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Dave Holland (acoustic bass); Harvey Brooks (electric bass); Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producers: Jim Fishel, Joe McEwen, Teo Macero. Recorded at CBS Records Studios, New York between October 1955 and January 1970. Originally released on Columbia (36278). Although this two-disc set is a compilation -- primarily consisting of extended outtakes -- Circle in the Round features the true colors of jazz chameleon Miles Davis (trumpet) during a 15-year (1955-1970) span from eight different recording sessions. Whether it was serendipity or astute coordination that gathered these sides together, Davis enthusiasts will undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy from his prolific and seemingly perpetual metamorphosis. The sessions are presented chronologically for the most part, beginning with a composite of "Two Bass Hit." This version is from an October 1955 Kind of Blue session featuring John Coltrane (tenor sax) and a band Davis refers to as "the trio": Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). From the May 1958 recording date comes another major session featuring an all-star lineup: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto sax), Coltrane (tenor sax), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Their single take on Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" is an amazing performance that allows for some intensely cool solos from Miles and Adderley in particular. Listen as well for some tasty piano fills from Evans, as this is the sort of interaction that he'd become synonymous with. Although "Blues No. 2" ...
