Blue Break Beats, Vol. 1 CD (1992)
Much Obliged: The Smooth Jazz Sessions to the Music of Mary J. Blige buy CD music Blue Note released the two-volume Blue Break Beats compilation in the early '90s. The music on Blue Break Beats dates from the late '60s and early '70s, when a large portion of Blue Note's soul-jazz artists began experimenting with funk and rock, creating dense electric fusions that concentrated on rhythm, not improvisation. None of this music has ever received much critical praise from jazz purists, but in the late '80s and early '90s, scores of hip-hop and dance DJs discovered these old records and began sampling the original tracks to use in new rap and dance songs. By the early '90s, this jazz-rap-funk fusion had become hip and profitable, which led Blue Note to assemble the Blue Break Beats compilations. All of the tracks on the two discs are from late '60s and early '70s albums, featuring multi-layered percussion, organs, and guitars. Every song on the two discs -- which are sold separately -- is hot, with a deep funky groove, and there are no dull spots on the albums. Though it's designed to appeal to fans of contemporary funk and rap, fans of rock-influenced soul-jazz will find Blue Break Beats a necessary purchase. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Jazz For Those Peaceful Moments CD (2003)
Much Obliged: The Smooth Jazz Sessions to the Music of Mary J. Blige CD music Jazz for Those Peaceful Moments, as released by Savoy Jazz in 2003, is basically an expanded version of the Peaceful Moments disc released by 32 Jazz in 1999. Instead of one disc, there are now two, which increases the total number of tracks from 11 to 17. The new tracks are drawn from the same source as those on the original release, the catalog of the Muse label from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Jazz giants like James Moody, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Burrell, and Red Garland all contribute tracks and brush shoulders with jazz middleweights like Ricky Ford, Russell Gunn, and Cecil Brooks III. As the title suggests, the songs are relaxed and the mood is mellow. Although the songs date from well beyond jazz's peak years, the performances are uniformly solid and the disc is a nice low-priced collection of mood music. ~ Tim Sendra

Mark: vln O'Connor American Classics CD (2012)
Much Obliged: The Smooth Jazz Sessions to the Music of Mary J. Blige songs The country and bluegrass fiddler Mark O'Connor has been a pioneer in the institutionalization of American vernacular styles, participating in various symphonic and chamber music projects, and establishing an impressive range of educational activities. He has headlined or participated in various recordings involving country-classical or folk-classical fusions (including Yo-Yo Ma's Appalachian Journey). This release lies between his marquee career and his educational empire. It was released in conjuction with a new volume of his O'Connor method violin instruction books, and the arrangements heard are taken directly from that volume. They're straightforward versions of familiar tunes from a large variety of traditions: old-time fiddle music, ragtime, jazz minstrelsy, labor song ("We Shall Overcome" is the representative here), religious music, patriotic songs, spirituals, and more. The piano accompaniments, played by Rieko Aizawa, are in the simple parlor mode of the 19th century. The emphasis is on the diversity of the American tradition rather than on virtuoso performance, and O'Connor's project becomes more and more interesting in this respect as he develops it further. Undeniably, no one has attempted anything of this scope since Dvorák's day, and those intrigued by that, as well as actual students of O'Connor's method, will enjoy this album. For those more interested in the end result, check out one of O'Connor's more extensive classical pieces, such as "Fanfare for the Volunteer." ~ James Manheim
