| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Lowrider Music CD music
$19.19 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway ...
| | Fred Hammond Pages Of Life: Chapters I & II CDs (1998)
Lowrider Music music CDs
$15.95 Under the guiding hand of Hammond, this double disc represents the place where the church meets the funk. R&B's roots have always been in Gospel music to begin with, so it makes sense that someone like Hammond would come along. With the able assistance of a crack funk band, Hammond mixes floor-shaking rhythms with propulsive, rhythmic keyboards and guitars and a gospel choir that supports his own vocal ululations. While the lyrics are exclusively spiritual in nature, the beat is undeniably danceable. Ultimately, PAGES OF LIFE is the intersection of theology and rhythm, achieved so seamlessly that you can't tell where the testifying ends and the harmonizing begins.

| | Best Of Mississippi Fred Mcdowell CD (2001)
Lowrider Music songs
$14.55 Mississippi Fred McDowell lays down Delta blues as though time pretty much stood still. Discovered by Alan Lomax in the late '50s, his career as an authentic bluesman took off in the '60s, thanks to Arhoolie. The Best of Mississippi Fred McDowell showcases the singer's gritty vocals and slide guitar on some of his best '60s work. The power of "Fred's Worried Life Blues" and "Write Me a Few of Your Lines" resonates deep in the bones, while forceful versions of "Good Morning Little School Girl" and "You Gotta Move" strip away a hundred rip-offs. These cuts also feature McDowell's instrument of choice, the acoustic guitar. While resistant to new currents, he nonetheless plugged in on occasion. Earth-shaking electric cuts like "Levee Camp Blues" and "Meet Me Down in Froggy Bottom" rumble and hum. Even with a band, though, McDowell reminds one more of Lightnin' Hopkins than Muddy Waters. He remains rooted in the Delta. When he delivers a bit of blues, like "My Baby," he reaches deep and finds something elemental. McDowell ...

| | Ananda Project Fire Flower CD (2007)
Lowrider Music music CDs
$12.19 Over three years since the Ananda Project's last full-length album, the lengthy, seamlessly eclectic Fire Flower neatly encapsulates the smooth, groove-oriented chillout vibe endemic to Chris Brann's vision. Moving easily from micro-genre to micro-genre between tracks, with Terrance Downs and Heather Johnson, as always, handling the lion's share of the vocals, Fire Flower never sounds like a mishmash of currently fashionable ideas. Brann has developed not only a trademark sound but also a subtly effective set of alterations that keeps the Ananda Project sounding fresh, and Fire Flower is as good as anything the producer has yet created. Although the album works beautifully as a whole, the particular standouts are first single "Into the Sunrise," a showcase for Downs that is likely the closest thing to a genuine pop single the Ananda Project has yet managed, and the ...
