"Sixteen cutting edge artists contribute their best tracks to create the ultimate coffee house collection." That's what is printed above the track listing to Eclectic Cafe, a disc that features bands that are decades old and solo artists who peaked somewhere during the middle of the '90s. As far as the disc's title is concerned, there isn't an incredible difference between its two most disparate artists. In fact, you could leave the disc playing in the background and not recall any track-to-track transitions once it reaches the end. That said, this set is ideal for coffee shops, specializing in calm, light, and subtle songs that can either be mildly stimulating or tuned out. ~ Andy Kellman
Personnel: Marina Celeste, Jennifer Price, Sarah McLachlan, Elles DeGraaf (vocals).
Audio Mixer: Hugh Jones.

$17.85 With a concept that could have failed on so many levels in lesser hands, Ry Cooder stuns once again in MY NAME IS BUDDY and demonstrates why he is one of America's most adventurous musicians. His chosen material is a loose collection of animal character sketches--the titular Buddy is a cat--based on labor struggles and the lower class in Depression-era America. Think of it as Woody Guthrie meets Beatrix Potter.
While an odd construct ...

| | Mike Pope Lay Of The Land CD (2002)
Eclectic Cafe songs
$13.55 Assuming the world doesn't come to an end anytime soon, it's a fairly safe bet that in time, every successful jazz sideman will be offered a deal from a major or indie label to make an attempt at a solo career. Most likely, every one of these sidemen will take advantage of the bigger names they work with to help market their own music. But why not? Mike Pope had been one of the Big Apple's key groove cats over the past decade, and his resumé had been helped along by none other than Randy Brecker and Mike Stern -- who, along with Michael Brecker, fellow first bassman John Patitucci, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, help bring Pope's debut to powerful improvisational levels. Pope clearly loves the interplay, jumping out of the box with the fast and funky "The First Order of Business," a spotlight for Randy Brecker and Watts. There's emotional balance provided by other Pope originals like the gently romantic "Essence" and the one standard in the bunch, "The Way You Look Tonight," which is given an abstract and expansive treatment. And even in the post-9/11 world of American tributes, you can't say you've heard many top jazz players do a thoughtful version of "The Star Spangled Banner," can you? ~ Jonathan Widran
Mike Pope is a real renaissance man. He is a musician of broad scope and tremendous talent. His virtuosity on electric and acoustic bass is rare even by today's standards. His harmonic sophistication is matched only by his ability to improvise on a very high level with great consistency. To top it off, he's no slouch on the piano either(it's in the family genes). In addition I'd also like to note that Mr. Pope is an inventor as well(designs and builds pre-amps for basses etc.). All this plus he can take your car apart and rebuild it for you. Is there anything Mike Pope can't do???? John Patitucci 2/1/02-CD Liner Notes- If you're a fan of the bass and this CD is your first encounter with Michael Pope, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The Lay of the Land is a wonderful session, full of the leader's great writing and playing, with brilliant essays along the way by the members of this all-star line-up. Given the fact that this recording makes such a mature artist statement, the only surprise should be that we all don't have music by Michael Pope in our collections already. To that I can only say - good things are worth waiting for. Michael did not emerge fully formed from nowhere. After completing his studies at North Texas State, he moved to Los Angeles for a time, then to New York City, where he rolled up his sleeves and went to work paying dues with an array of r&b, rock and jazz groups, on both acoustic and electric bass. I first came across Michael when I was looking for an electric bassist for Wirewalkers, my group at the time. I already knew him by reputation, and he came highly recommended as an articulate musician with a lot of harmonic knowledge, who could also really groove on the r&b influenced material we were playing in Wirewalkers. He was a perfect fit for the band. We had a weekly engagement at a NYC coffeehouse and we were having a ball, developing the group's repertoire, trying new ideas, just having a great time. We started sneaking some straight-ahead jazz tunes into the book, and Michael said, "I'm gonna bring my acoustic bass next time. It might ...
