You just can't seem to escape metal bands nowadays that feature a hardcore screamer on vocals who isn't afraid to show his sensitive/melodic side for the chorus, a guitarist who specializes in rubbery riffs, and a drummer who was raised on Slayer-like rhythms. With their 2006 debut, Prey for Murder, you can now add Speakers for the Dead to the ever-growing list. Beginning life as a gothic hardcore band (under the name Gryp), the Fresno, California-based quartet's role models are obviously Pantera as they unleash all their pent-up anger throughout the album. This sonic approach is especially evident on such rage rockers as the album opening "Finally," "No Wrong," and "Pest," while they reach their most melodic on the mid-album epic "Long Way." Prey for Murder is the perfect soundtrack for angst-ridden teens who have the weight of the world on their shoulders. ~ Greg Prato
Speakers for the Dead: Curtis Shamlin (vocals); Jason Garcia (guitars); Rob Slocum (electric bass); Gary Shipman (drums).

$5.99 Despite recording two hit studio albums with Black Sabbath (1980's HEAVEN AND HELL and 1981's THE MOB RULES) and playing throughout the world to huge crowds, Ronnie James Dio left the band in 1982-the year of his final release with Sabbath, the in-concert LIVE EVIL. As soon as the announcement of his departure was made official, ...

Prey For Murder music CDs
$12.79 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, distorted guitar tones carry the authority of years of hard touring and introspective yet still crushing rock, while bassist Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om) and Melvins drummer Dale Crover shake the earth with their gigantic ...

Prey For Murder album
$10.19 "Schism" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Approaching Tool's LATERALUS with a casual ear would be a careless endeavor, to say the least. The sheer magnitude of the musical and emotional textures is as heady as it is primal. Standing out as one of the defining traits of the Tool sound is Justin Chancellor's hauntingly melodic bass playing, which often launches into a role reversal with the ...

| | Insomnium Since The Day It All Came Down CD (2004)
Prey For Murder songs
$12.75 Mention the Scandinavian death metal/black metal scene to someone who doesn't follow it closely, and he/she is likely to think of a bunch of amelodic, occult-obsessed bands that engage in bombast for the sake of bombast and brutality for the sake of brutality. That's the stereotypical view of Nordic death metal/black metal, and many of the Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish bands in that scene happily live up to it. Some Scandinavian death metallers, in fact, are honest enough to admit that their scene can be something of an inside joke (much like techno/rave music). But the '90s and 2000s have also seen a wave of Nordic death metal bands that are highly melodic, and Finland's Insomnium is part of that trend. The most extreme thing about Since the Day It All Came Down is the vocal style; lead singer/bassist Niilo Sevänen sings in a deep, guttural, demonic-sounding growl that exemplifies the stereotypical image of death metal singing. But other than that, this 2004 ...
| | Bill Bruford Bruford Tapes CDs (1980) Reissue
Prey For Murder album
$14.28 This live date from 1979 captures one of drummer Bill Bruford's pre-Earthworks groups in a dynamic performance. Although the broadcast tape used for this disc may not have been the best quality, the performance of this powerful ensemble of fusion masters transcends any audio deficiencies. Included in the group with the legendary British drummer are bassist Jeff Berlin, keyboardist Dave Stewart, and guitarist John Clark. Together, lead by Bruford's always-unique drumming, they make a good argument for the existence of the oft-maligned "electric" jazz of the '70s.
Tracks like the boisterous opener "Hell's Bells" and the exceptional "Fainting In Coils" bring an air of raucous adventure to the fore as Bruford and company open the flood gates wide, ignoring any standard conceptions of neither traditional jazz nor rock. The free-flowing attitude of the group is ...

| | Paul Anka Classic Songs, My Way CD (2007)
Prey For Murder music CDs
$11.99 Paul Anka's Rock Swings was one of the best albums of its type, that being the sort where a swinging singer reimagines a set of contemporary songs in a radically different setting. There were far more successes than novelties, and it earned Anka -- deservedly -- his best reviews in at least a decade. Classic Songs: My Way includes 11 more that are just as ingeniously selected and performed, plus a pair of Anka classics re-recorded as duets. The covers (or interpretations, depending on whether you're a fan of rock music or vocal) are up to the same high level as Rock Swings. Highlights include a brisk, finger-snapping version of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," a poignant reading of the Duran Duran ballad "Ordinary World," and a brassy reading of "I Go to Extremes," originally by one of rock's biggest swingers, Billy Joel. In comparison, the re-recordings fare poorly. Although Michael Bublé shows fine chops on "You Are My Destiny," Jon Bon Jovi fails utterly to understand how to approach "My Way" amidst a tone-deaf ...
