You just can't seem to escape metal bands nowadays that feature a hardcore screamer on vocals who isn't afraid to show his sensitive/melodic side for the chorus, a guitarist who specializes in rubbery riffs, and a drummer who was raised on Slayer-like rhythms. With their 2006 debut, Prey for Murder, you can now add Speakers for the Dead to the ever-growing list. Beginning life as a gothic hardcore band (under the name Gryp), the Fresno, California-based quartet's role models are obviously Pantera as they unleash all their pent-up anger throughout the album. This sonic approach is especially evident on such rage rockers as the album opening "Finally," "No Wrong," and "Pest," while they reach their most melodic on the mid-album epic "Long Way." Mention the Scandinavian death metal/black metal scene to someone who doesn't follow it closely, and he/she is likely to think of a bunch of amelodic, occult-obsessed bands that engage in bombast for the sake of bombast and brutality for the sake of brutality. That's the stereotypical view of Nordic death metal/black metal, and many of the Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish bands in that scene happily live up to it. Some Scandinavian death metallers, in fact, are honest enough to admit that their scene can be something of an inside joke (much like techno/rave music). This live date from 1979 captures one of drummer Bill Bruford's pre-Earthworks groups in a dynamic performance. Although the broadcast tape used for this disc may not have been the best quality, the performance of this powerful ensemble of fusion masters transcends any audio deficiencies. Included in the group with the legendary British drummer are bassist Jeff Berlin, keyboardist Dave Stewart, and guitarist John Clark. Together, lead by Bruford's always-unique drumming, they make a good argument for the existence of the oft-maligned "electric" jazz of the '70s.
