| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Plays Photos Of W Erwitt CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising ...

| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2 CD (1987)
Plays Photos Of W Erwitt CD music
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey Balfa, the band's de facto leader is possessed of a classic Cajun vocal style; it's frequently impossible to tell whether he's ...
| | Tim Hodgkinson Pragma CD (1998)
Plays Photos Of W Erwitt music CDs
$15.29 The 1994 CD Each in Our Own Thoughts introduced the sampler and computer into Tim Hodgkinson's arsenal. Pragma pushes further in that direction. The six "works" (dixit the subtitle "New Works by Tim Hodgkinson") are presented like classical works -- for example, "Repulsion" is "for clarinet, electric guitar, brass instruments, percussion" -- but they are not. The composer assembled them with the help of digital technology. Some have scores, they use acoustic instruments, but they have not been performed as they are here by musicians. Hodgkinson collected samples from a few musicians (Charles Mutter, Albert Markos, Marion Coutts), produced a lot himself (on clarinet, guitar, percussion, viola), and stole the rest off CDs. The soundsmith deserves an A+; his work is seamless and natural-sounding and will fool most listeners. On the other hand, the compositions lack something that would make them memorable. They have a lot of impetus, even at times an ardor that recalls the composer's background as a rock musician, but otherwise they remain cerebral -- impressive but cold. "For Looking Inside," for three prepared violas, offers very interesting textures, ...
| | Against All Odds CD (1984) Original Soundtrack
Plays Photos Of W Erwitt songs
$5.75 While the soundtrack to the 1984 Out of the Past remake Against All Odds is now best remembered for Phil Collins' classic theme song for the movie, the album also features several other memorable songs, as well as excerpts from Larry Carlton's synthesizer-heavy score. "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now") remains not only one of Collins' definitive singles, but one of the 1980s' best love songs, a perfect mix of over-the-top drama and genuine emotion that has aged better than anyone might have expected in 1984. The rest of the album, meanwhile, sounds completely of its time, but that's a big part of its appeal; songs such as Stevie Nicks' brooding "Violet and Blue," Mike Rutherford's "Making a Big Mistake," and Big Country's surprisingly dour "Balcony" make the soundtrack a veritable time capsule of mid-'80s mainstream pop. "Walk Through the Fire" may not be one of Peter Gabriel's strongest or most memorable tracks, but it's still a decent example ...
