Miami's Winter Music Conference is revered as an "institution" by those in the know and has been acknowledged by the media worldwide as a crucially important event on the music calendar. The general (and well deserved) perception of the gathering is that of a dance institution that tirelessly breaks new DJ's, producers, parties, new sounds and has its finger firmly on the pulse of tomorrow's hits. The millions who have passed through security turnstyles on both sides of Miami International Airport because they believed (and still believe) in its relevance can't be wrong. Neither was the Azuli label wrong in creating a series that annually flicks the 'v' at the doubters and shouters in order to represent the vibe of a conference that moves so fast, it makes even the future look old-fashioned. Nor are you wrong for supporting this series and for that, we thank you. Miami 2006 Songs | 1. | Teamsters - Feels Like Love (Morjac Club) |

| | Danny Heines What Worlds They Bring CD (2002)
Miami 2006
$21.49 The opener, "Vir Vir," for example, has Heines playing a nervous, staccato guitar figure, while a female vocalist drifts through an Indian-flavored melody that has all the hookiness of a pop chorus. "Two Body Play" rides a funky, spacious beat, with Heines himself lending Tuvan-style throat singing to excellent effect. On the shimmering "Singing with Gargoyles" (which prominently features Burhoe's tablas), and elsewhere, it is possible to hear both the traditional folk melodies on which Heines based these compositions, and the contemporary flair that he and his cadre of fine musicians bring to the songs.
Danny Heines is a truly gifted musician in who has emerged as one of the world Õs most innovative guitarists. In addition to his virtuosity as a finger-style guitarist, his love for poly-rhythms has led him to pioneer the technique of ÒtappingÓ, on acoustic guitar. This allows him to play complex multi-layered compositions while bringing a uniquely percusive sound to the guitar. In addition to his work as a guitarist Danny is among a handful of Americans adept in the technique of throat singing, wherein the overtones in the voice are naturally amplified and manipulated to create melodies while a single pitch is held. Danny's strong passion for world music can be felt on his newly released fifth CD, "What Worlds They Bring" which includes innovative arrangements of folk melodies from Eastern Europe and Africa.HeinesÕ four albums on Silverwave Records have swept the airwaves, consistently ...

| | Blind Blake All The Published Sides CDs (2003) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Miami 2006
$25.35 As with many comprehensive pre-1940s blues sets, especially those devoted to artists who recorded on the old Paramount label, the five-CD All the Published Sides set is both a godsend and a study in frustration. Paramount wasn't known for its high-quality pressings when it was in business, and its bankruptcy in the early '30s and the destruction of its masters completed the picture, as far as sound quality. That said, this set is a modest improvement over Document Records' various Blind Blake CD issues of the late '80s, as well as being significantly cheaper; there's still plenty of noise on some of the tracks, and even the third version of "West Coast Blues" -- the best-sounding side on disc one -- contains some minor noise and slight distortion. This pattern is repeated throughout the 110 sides, very clean-sounding 78s juxtaposed with what must be the most abominable condition sources imaginable. Nowhere is this more frustrating than what ought to be a highlight of the entire set, "Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It, Pt. 1" and "Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It, Pt. 2," pairing the almost primordial bluesman Papa Charlie Jackson with Blake -- yet neither side is in good enough shape to yield more than the most minimally ...
