| | Bill Evans Complete Quartet Recordings CD (2005) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve; France
Le Coeur Dans La Tete album
$13.15 This Lone Hill Jazz compilation is a bit misleading. Though Bill Evans and Eddie Costa are present on every track, this CD actually consists of the complete contents of his album Guys and Dolls Like Vibes plus one track from Michel Legrand's Legrand Jazz. The Frank Loesser songs chosen from his Broadway musical Guys and Dolls (a fairly recent hit at the time of these 1958 sessions) are fertile ground for Costa (who sticks to vibes, though he was also a good pianist) and Evans. Their logical improvisations on these catchy melodies, several of which became popular vehicles for jazz musicians and singers, feature both men equally, backed by the superb team of bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Paul Motian. One can feel the chemistry in the swinging take of "Guys and Dolls," the moving ballad "Adelaide" (an overlooked gem from the show) and the explosive take of "If I Were a Bell" (the latter which Evans would record later that year with Miles Davis, who had covered the piece in 1956 as well). But it is the wild rhythmic approach to "Luck Be a Lady" that proves to be the most unusual arrangement of the Loesser material. On the sole track from Legrand Jazz, Miles Davis is the featured soloist in John Lewis' "Django," with Costa and Evans relegated to the background, along with guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Paul ...
| | Carole King Collections CD (2006)
Le Coeur Dans La Tete CD music
$8.65 The Collection includes 3 separate albums: REALLY ROSIE (1975)/MUSIC (1971)/TAPESTRY (1971).
This is an Australian compilation of some of the best work by Carole King. While it is represented and contains all classic tracks, it is rather generic in its presentation and leaves so much stuff out ("So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "You've Got a Friend" are all missing!) it's ridiculous. This could easily have been a 12- to 15-cut collection with time to spare, so one has to wonder what the producers of this comp were smoking when they assembled it. For the money there are many compilations out there that leave this one in the dust. The star rating is for the music, not the presentation. ~ Thom Jurek
This three-pack collects some of Carole King's finest moments from the ...

| | Live Adventures Of Mike Bloomfield And Al Kooper CDs (1969)
Le Coeur Dans La Tete music CDs
$15.15 Recorded live at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, California on September 26-28, 1968. Includes liner notes by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Tom Wheeler.
This warts-and-all document of three shows recorded live at the old Fillmore West in September 1968 is a genuinely entertaining period piece. Designed to cash in on the success of the Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills live-in-the-studio SUPER SESSION which had been a surprise hit earlier that year, this nonetheless features only one tune from that album, the lengthy psychedelic jam "His Holy Modal Majesty."
The rest of the album is mostly traditional blues, with the notable exceptions of an inventive slow soul version of ...
