On their second album, the fetching Los Angeles duo the Ditty Bops combine the old-world Western swing charm of Dan Hicks with the fey vocal harmonies and offbeat subject matter of the Roches. The empathetic, all-star backing band and Mitchell Froom's pristine production don't hurt, either.
Ditty Bops: Abby DeWald (vocals, acoustic guitar); Amanda Barrett (vocals, mandolin, washboard).
Additional personnel: John Lambdin (guitar, lap steel guitar, violin); Val McCallum, Richard Sherwood (electric guitar); Greg Rutledge (accordion, piano); Mitchell Froom (keyboards); Davey Faragher (electric bass); Ian Walker (bass guitar); Pete Thomas (drums, percussion); Rick Sherwood (drums).

| | New Pornographers Twin Cinema CD (2005)
Moon Over The Freeway
$10.15 The follow-up to indie-rock collective New Pornographers' lauded ELECTRIC VERSION, 2005's TWIN CINEMA expands on that album's power-pop sound. Here the group, masterminded by singer/multi-instrumentalist A.C. Newman, has added a new member--vocalist/pianist Kathryn Calder (Newman's niece)--while both the songwriting and arrangements have become more adventurous.
The energetic title track sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Wire and Big Star, while "The Bones of an Idol" recalls mid-1970s Brian Eno. As always, alt-country star Neko Case steals the show, particularly on "These Are the Fables," an urgent, piano-based tune that spotlights her potent Patsy Cline-on-caffeine vocals. Destroyer's Dan Bejar also contributes a handful of songs, including the ...

| | Nick Lowe Jesus Of Cool: 30th Anniversary Edition CD (1978) Reissue; Digipak
Moon Over The Freeway
$12.55 Nick Lowe's first album threw down the gauntlet in grand form--a baker's dozen of "pure pop for now people" (which is, in fact, what a nervous Columbia Records retitled the album for its stateside release). Lowe was charting regularly in his English homeland, and though he didn't reach the same heights of chart success in America, several songs have become familiar late '70s/early '80s reference points, particularly "I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass" and "So It Goes." At the time of this album's release Lowe was also the house producer for Stiff Records (Britain's first independent record company) and Elvis Costello, producing his first handful of albums, as well as touring regularly with Rockpile. This is an auspicious debut, made good upon thereafter by a continuingly engaging career.
On the cover of his solo debut album Jesus of Cool, Nick Lowe is pictured in ...

| | Corey Hart First Offense CD (1984) (Import) Canada
Moon Over The Freeway
$11.79 Canadian pop singer Corey Hart's first album from 1983 includes the hit "Sunglasses at Night" and "At the Dance."
Corey Hart's debut album encompasses much of the '80s pop sound, namely with "Sunglasses at Night," an instant classic with its distinctive melody and catchy chorus. Often considered a one-hit wonder, Hart was a staple act in regular rotation on radio and MTV throughout the '80s with nine Top 40 Billboard hits and over ten million records sold. Many say 1984 was the pinnacle for '80s music, and for Hart this release came to define his sound. With a distinctive Canadian accent he stood out even with what was sometimes indistinguishable music. All the cliched '80s sounds are here in full force, from the brooding saxophone, the bratty guitar solo, the snotty background vocalists, and the catchy keyboard riffs. Hart, though, is obviously impassioned about the part that he plays. Constantly striving to raise many of his lyrics above the meter, he can come across as clumsy when he tries too hard. Where Hart succeeds is when he allows the hooks to catch. The tragic lovelorn stadium ballad appears with "It ...
| | Frequent Flyer: Barcelona CDs (2006)
Moon Over The Freeway
$16.49 Of the numerous brands of mix CDs released by Kinkysweet, the Frequent Flyer line is the most interesting. Like all Kinkysweet releases, each is a double-CD mix comprised of deep house, most tracks employing vocals sparsely. The Frequent Flyer releases are unique because they're giving a geographic accent; in the case of Frequent Flyer: Barcelona, there's a shade of Catalan culture and music. This distinguishing characteristic ...
