Guitarist Tom DeLonge's post-Blink-182 band Angels & Airwaves' 2006 debut album is an attractive blend of shimmering electronica and alternative rock, conjuring the glory days of 1980s pop with shiny, anthemic songs like the album-opening "Valkyrie Missile" and the stomping stadium rock of "Distraction." WE DON'T NEED TO WHISPER also revives the dormant notion of the concept album, with several songs taken from a projected film based on episodes from DeLonge's life. Think U2 without the messianic overtones, with a hint of Genesis thrown in for good measure.
Angels & Airwaves: Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar); David Kennedy (guitar); Ryan Sinn (bass guitar); Atom Willard (drums).
Spin (p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'The Adventure' is at once seductively sleek and intriguingly complex." Alternative Press (p.202) - "Musically, there's no real gimmick; just lush instrumentation, chunky arena-rock riffing and some of the best anthems U2 forgot to include on THE JOSHUA TREE." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.63) - "[A] bold and brilliant debut...[With] some stunning moments of perfection. 'The Adventure' is a euphoric, soaring anthem..." Blown away! First off, I never liked blink 182. So I didn't expect to even like this. This is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. The layers, the melodies, the dense production, there isn't a bad track on this which is amazing. I love it front to back. I am sure there are blink182 fans who don't get this at all. That's okay. The rest of us are loving this. GET THIS NOW! Trust me. Submitted by Rob (Albany, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Breathtakingingly beatuiful arrangement!!!! Tom has really taken the great guitar riffs that made him so famous in Blink 182 and put forth a more amture and exceptionally layered collection of guitar riffs that might make 80's idols the Edge, Johnny Marr, and Peter Buck intrigued. This has everything you would want in a catchy, melodic album and what may be the new future of alternative music, as the way Blink influenced so many bands in the mellenium. Great CD!!!!!! Still in love, after all these years... I've just accepted that I'll be a follower of Tom DeLonge for as long as I live. He's been, without contest, the biggest influence on me musically. He's also been the soudtrack for my teenhood, and now my early adulthood. I don't think there's anybody who can put as much fun into a song as he can.
To me, this CD sounds like a birth album. I can tell by listening to it that Angels and Airwaves are only just starting to emerge into what they will become. I'm terribly exited to see what new music comes from all of this. BUY THE ALBUM!!!!!!!

We Don't Need To Whisper
$15.55 Recorded live at The Rodon, Athens, Greece on January 23 & 24, 1999. Includes liner notes by Jon Schaffer.
Iced Earth produces one of the most convincing live albums of the '90s. Alive in Athens crushes with the same monumental energy as Iron Maiden's Live After Death and Blind Guardian's Tokyo Tales, quite a lofty feat. With a visual approach akin to the "Eddie marketing campaign" of Maiden, Iced Earth has thrust themselves into the proverbial power metal spotlight with a destructively catchy sound to back it up. Live, Matt Barlow's soaring vocals pierce with studio-like quality, while the guitar pairing of Jon Schaffer and Larry Tarnowski echoes back to the glory days of a previously mentioned British supergroup. Not to be missed either is bassist James McDonough, who, while not flashy, certainly is the glue of the band's tighter-than-thou power metal sound. Iced Earth staples like "Dark Saga," "Stormrider," "Last December," and "Pure Evil" are included, along with newer cuts from the last album, Something Wicked This Way Comes. Iced Earth is quite adept at wielding the energy of the crowd (similar to Blind Guardian) to their advantage. They use it to give the live sound a burst of energy that entraps the listener, leaving them at the bands mercy. ~ ...
