Free's second album was recorded with the band itself in considerable turmoil as principle songwriters Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser demanded strict discipline from their bandmates, and guitarist Paul Kossoff, in particular, equally demanded the spontaneity and freedom that had characterized the group's debut. It was an awkward period that saw both Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke come close to quitting, an eventuality that only the intervention of label chief Chris Blackwell seems to have prevented. Few of these tensions are evident on the finished album -- tribute, again, to Blackwell's powers of diplomacy. He replaced original producer Guy Stevens early into the sessions and, having reminded both warring parties where the band's strengths lie, proceeded to coax out an album that stands alongside its predecessor as a benchmark of British blues at the turn of the 1960s. ~ Dave Thompson

Free album
$19.69 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" and its memorable video. The Ultimate Collection spans the group's career in two discs, including the hits, B-sides, and key album tracks. ~ Steve Leggett
Arguably the finest and most expansive Kinks collection on the market! The first disc of this double-disc begins with their third single and first No. 1, the insistent 'You Really Got Me', then races through the glory years with the absurdly infectious likes of 'Sunny Afternoon', 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Lola' and 'Apeman'. Dave's two hits are included, too, and ...
| | Ozzy Osbourne Ultimate Sin CD (1986) Germany; Remastered
Free CD music
$9.25 Also available in a 3-pack with DIARY OF A MADMAN and BARK AT THE MOON.
Ozzy Osbourne's 1983 release, BARK AT THE MOON, revealed that keyboards were becoming an integral ingredient in his music. On his next release, THE ULTIMATE SIN, keyboards were used even more extensively, resulting in Ozzy's most commercially accessible work. Despite the fact that many longtime fans resented the album's pop-metal leanings, THE ULTIMATE SIN became Osbourne's fastest-selling album to that point. It was also the last Ozzy Osbourne album to feature guitarist Jake E. Lee.
The most renowned song on THE ULTIMATE SIN remains the popular video/single "Shot in the Dark." Other standouts included the anti-nuclear war tracks "Thank God for the Bomb" and "Killer of Giants" (the latter was the album's working title for quite some time), as well as the title track and "Lightning Strikes," which were both popular MTV videos as well. Although Ozzy enjoyed his greatest commercial success to that point with this record, he returned to his more familiar heavy metal tendencies of yore on his next studio release, 1989's NO REST FOR THE WICKED.
1995 special collector's edition, 22 bit digital re-master complete with all original artwork plus bonus photos. Osbourne streamlines his approach to keep up with the emerging trend toward slick, radio-ready metal. There are some good moments, ...
| | Motorhead Stone Deaf Forever! CDs (2003) Box Set
Free music CDs
$50.75 Includes 60-page booklet with rare photos, extensive discographies and full-length essay by Mick Wall.
Recorded between 1975 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Mike Wall.
The liner notes that Mick Wall wrote for Stone Deaf Forever are full of interesting anecdotes, but the most interesting of all has to do with a 1979 show that found Motörhead and the Damned appearing on the same bill. According to Lemmy Kilmister, a lot of bottles were thrown that night. Motörhead fans threw bottles at the Damned, and Damned fans threw bottles at Motörhead. These days, Motörhead and the Damned seem like a perfectly logical combination, but back in the late '70s, there was still a great deal of animosity between headbangers and punks. However, they became the best of friends in the '80s, and Motörhead deserve much of the credit for that alliance. Arguably, Motörhead were the first thrash metal band; they were the first band to combine metal's heaviness with punk's reckless, amphetamine-like speed and velocity, and their innovations paved the way for Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth as well as countless grindcore, death metal, hardcore, grunge, ...

| | Greyhound Black And White CD (1972)
Free music CDs
$9.99 Although they are generally regarded as lightweight purveyors of orchestrated reggae-pop, Britain's Greyhound had moments of being something more, particularly on the Stax-meets-Jamaica instrumentals "Floating," "Funky Jamaica," and "Judgement Rock," all of which are included in this collection from Trojan, which is essentially their lone album, plus a few extra tracks. That Southern soul edge surfaces from time to time in these cuts, indicating what this band might have been, but Greyhound's bread and butter was in mainstreaming pop covers with big doses of heavy strings, and their big hits, like their version of Earl Robinson's "Black and White" (recorded ...

| | John Martyn Mad Dog Days CDs (2004) (Import) Bonus DVD; France
Free CD music
$23.35 This 3 disc set includes a 54 minute DVD interview with Martyn. The CDs include live performances and studio sessions from the 70s through the 90s. Included are special appearances from Dave Gilmour, Gerry Conway, Danny Thompson, and Phil Collins.
A three-disc box set (two CDs and a DVD), Mad Dog Days is a spotty, seemingly random compilation of live and studio recordings. A rehash of John Martyn's late-'70s and '80s live recordings previously released by the Voiceprint and Artful labels, larded with four studio tracks from 1993's No Little Boy (itself a collection of re-recordings of older material with guest spots from famous fans Phil Collins and David Gilmour), there is no rare material here for the avid collector, and newcomers would not be well served by this mishmash of minor live tracks and remakes that includes ...

$6.29 | | Sulek Songs From The Doctor's Office CD (2008)
Free album
$12.69 Sulek is a band. A band based on a man. Patrick Joseph Hoctor is not this man, but he is the man behind the guitar and mic stand. David Kelly is also not this man, but he is the man with piano and banjo in hand. Russell Scott McGowan is also not this man, but he is the bass man and founder of the olde 197 clan. And finally, Christopher Michael Winberg (that’s me) is not this man, but he is the man behind the band bringing the noise as loud as he can. Now for something completely different.Sulek is a band that formed on January 15th, 2005 in Pat’s home. The band had started with Chris, Pat, and David about a month earlier due to David’s inability to play the drum part to The Beatles “In My Life”, but it was not until Russ joined for the first recording of a few cover songs that the band started to take shape. This was not your ordinary band however, nor were their instruments. None of the band members have ever had a single lesson on their primary instruments i.e. Pat has never had guitar or vocal lessons, Russ has never had bass lessons, David says, “What is a piano teacher”, and I (though it was not without a lack of trying from the rest of the band) have never had a drum lesson. Additionally, I did not drum on a drum set, but rather on a piano with drum kit settings for the first four months of the band. The first time I really sat behind a set was five days before our first concert. Within a month of inception, the first original song by the band, “Chocolate Hangover,” was being written and started to take shape. The band played concerts sporadically throughout the next couple of years and went from the Hoctor’s house to the Winberg’s house before returning to the doctor’s office. In December of 2006, the band’s big “break” came in the form of the Fostex recording machine, with which the following recordings on this disc were produced from, given to them from Mr. and Mrs. Winberg. Within the next week, the band had produced their first recording, “Bazooka Tube,” and would continue recording over the next couple of years.College was a big step into the unknown for the band and its future was hanging in the balance. However, the band decided to stick together throughout 2006 and 2007 and writing and recording continued. It is also because of college that Sulek has gotten its biggest break and exposure, all owed to the brilliant animations of Grey Gerling, Pat’s roommate for the past two years. Grey started to use Sulek’s music as the music for his animations and was putting them onto the Internet on sites like Youtube, Newgrounds, and his own production site called Barfquestion Films. He got the band exposed to the public and there has been a slight buzz and calling for Sulek’s music to be made public. Despite Sulek’s steadfast position to remain hidden and out of the loop, in the fall of 2007, Grey was given the opportunity to have his animations showcased in his very own On-Demand special and as a result Sulek’s music was being thrust into mainstream society. As a result, the band decided to copyright their material and release an album. Finally, it is my privilege and the rest of Sulek’s privilege to present to you from ...
