| | Angel Singles Collection, Vol. 1 CD Angel Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Perry/Tyler had nothing on Punky Meadows and Frank DiMino, but arena-rockers Angel were often overshadowed by 1970s peers like Aerosmith and Queen. This two-volume hits package assembles some of their most memorable recordings, like "On and On" and the Angel theme song, along with lyrics and photos of the band in their prime.
Get your big hair on 13 tracks from the late '70s/early '80s east coast heavy metal combo featuring guitarist Punky Meadows. | | Foghat Decades Live CDs (2003) Remastered
Singles Collection, Vol. 1 CD music
$17.19 Recorded in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Still, the group retains most of their original lineup and their sweat-stained boogie-blues remains energetic enough, even though at over two hours, this is a bit much for all but the most dedicated. Extended versions of "Slow Ride" (at nine and a half minutes), "Chateau Laffite '59 Boogie" (nearly 15 minutes), and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (which clocks in at a whopping 16-plus minutes) will tax the endurance of anyone who wasn't at these shows, and even some who were. Rod Price is a talented slide guitarist, but when he lays into ...
| | Riot Narita CD (1979) Import
Singles Collection, Vol. 1 music CDs
$18.59 New York's Riot is unfortunate representative of a "lost generation" of American hard rock bands. Formed in the late '70s, when widespread record industry recession conspired with disco's airwave domination and headline-grabbing (but little-album-selling) punk rock to drive even some of the decade's most successful heavyweight dinosaurs (Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc.) to the brink of extinction, Riot saw precious few of their contemporaries (most notably Van Halen) actually make it through to the big time. Not so lucky as the California quartet, Riot had to seek out a foreign label to take a chance on their stellar eponymous debut in 1977, and then financed a second, Narita, on their own dime before managing to lure a still rather hesitant Capitol Records to pick it up. Finally released in late 1979, Narita was named after the Japanese airport controversially built on sacred ground (hence its bizarre album cover) and contained slick but powerful hard rock -- nowhere near as combustible as VH's debut, but hardly squeaky-clean like ...

| | Shout It Out Sister: The Great Female Blues Singers CDs (2006)

It's easy for Europeans to assemble solid -- and often great -- genre compilations that span decades, artists, and labels, simply because in many cases their copyright laws are different from those in the United States, where most of the vintage blues and jazz recordings originated. That said, while there is no denying that artists' estates are being ripped off wholesale, fans and collectors take delight in the many offerings on the "legit" market from overseas. Often, because no royalties are being paid, price points on CDs are attractively low while the aesthetic quality remains high -- check Proper and JSP, for example. This double-disc set from Primo in the Czech Republic is another case in point: there are 40 cuts here, both well-known and reasonably obscure, by female blues singers from the 1920s through to the mid-'50s. The sound quality is quite good considering that no original masters were used -- only existing digital masters and in some cases vinyl ...
