$21.94 Deluxe Edition
Anthrax: Joe Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (acoustic & electric guitars); Scott Ian (guitar); Frank Bello (bass); Charlie Benante (drums). Personnel: Joey Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (guitar); Frank Bello (bass guitar); Charlie Benante (drums). Audio Remasterer: Gavin Lurssen. Liner Note Author: Brian Posehn. Photographer: Waring Abbott. Generally considered the band's best album, Among the Living broadened the scope of Anthrax's subject matter with socially conscious lyrics addressing prejudice, violence, drug abuse ("Efilnikufesin [N.F.L.]," a rip on John Belushi), and the hollowness of the music business, as well as a politically correct ode to the "Indians." However, the band refuses to take itself too seriously, also recording tributes to Stephen King and Judge Dredd. Musically, the band delivers a powerful, aggressive roar driven by impossibly fast riffing and the changing tempos and collectively shouted vocals of hardcore, ...

$11.49 Audio Mixer: Chris Common. Photographer: Andrew Weiss. One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On WHAT WE ALL COME TO NEED, they have ...

$6.49 Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Anton Fig (drums). Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert Conte. Digitally remastered by Bill Levenson. Although Unmasked was certified gold shortly after its release in the U.S., it quickly fell off the charts. Deciding factors included the band's failure to mount a stateside tour, the fact that the majority of the compositions on Unmasked were easily forgettable, and longtime fans' weariness with Kiss' attempts to branch out into other musical styles. Vini Poncia was on board as producer again, and again he replaces the raw, heavy rock of earlier Kiss releases with pop gloss. Several tracks are indeed strong, and would have benefited greatly by a more direct sound, such as "Is That You?," "Talk to Me," "Two Sides of the Coin," "Naked City," and the single, "Shandi." But there's more filler on Unmasked than the average Kiss release -- "What Makes the World Go 'Round," "Tomorrow," and "She's So European" are tedious and predictable, both compositionally and sonically. Again, session drummer Anton Fig fills in for Peter Criss, who would officially split from the band soon after the album's release (eventually replaced by Eric Carr). Although the band's popularity dwindled in their homeland, they embarked on a massively successful European and Australian tour, where ...

Twisted Sister: Dee Snider (vocals); Jay Jay French, Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda (guitar, background vocals); Mark "The Animal" Mendoza (bass, background vocals); A.J. Pero (drums, background vocals). Recorded at The Sol Studio, Bershire, England. From the solid sales of their independently released debut album, 1982's Under the Blade, New York's Twisted Sister were finally rewarded with a major record label contract, courtesy of Atlantic, who issued their first domestic release, You Can't Stop Rock & Roll, a year later. The album followed the same raw heavy metal direction of their debut, and was even more consistent from a songwriting and performance standpoint. Several of Twisted Sister's best anthems reside here -- the title track (which was one of the band's first videos to be aired on MTV), as well as "The Kids Are Back," "We're Gonna Make It," and "I Am (I'm Me)." But besides a ballad that vocalist Dee Snider wrote especially for his wife, "You're Not Alone (Suzette's Song)," the album is comprised of 100 percent heavy metal -- "Like a Knife in the Back," "Ride to Live, Live to Ride," "I've Had Enough," and "I'll Take You Alive." The 1999 CD reissue included three bonus tracks not included on the original: "One Man Woman," "Four Barrel Heart of Love," and "Feel the Power." Eventually certified gold in the U.S., You Can't Stop Rock & Roll set the stage perfectly for their next release, 1984's breakthrough Stay Hungry. ~ Greg Prato Although New York's Twisted Sister wore makeup and stage costumes, the group was completely unlike other glam-metal bands of the early '80s. The group's 1983 major-label debut, YOU CAN'T STOP ROCK N' ROLL, is more akin musically to such harder-edged metal outfits as Motorhead and Metallica, while on stage, the band adopted a more freakish persona (while bands like Motley Crue did the opposite). Twisted Sister's U.S. debut wasn't the commercial breakthrough that its next release was (1984's hit STAY HUNGRY), but it did the job of introducing the band to the rest of America and solidified the band's standing in the U.K. (where Twisted Sister had already released an independent record). Highlights on this album include the title track, which would become a band staple, and the album-opening "The Kids Are Back." The Spitfire reissue also tacks on three previousy unreleased tracks to sweeten the pot, but regardless, Twisted Sister sounds both heavy and inspired throughout YOU CAN'T STOP ROCK N' ROLL. $14.29 Audio Mixer: Arnold Mischkulnig. Fans disappointed by the continued delay of the third Rakim solo album, The Seventh Seal, will perhaps find some solace in The Archive: Live, Lost & Found, which, as the title suggests, contains mainly live cuts as well as four new, previously unreleased tracks. Perhaps find solace only because the songs, the first four on the record, don't stand out as particularly strong parts of the rapper's discography, either alone or with Eric B. The single, "It's Nothing," has been in Ra's concert repertoire since 2006 (and in fact is even included as a live cut later on). It takes a decent but almost boringly straightforward DJ Static beat and has the MC rhyming about his skills and what he brings to hip-hop; not bad by any means, but very standard fare. Rakim sounds better when doing his older, more classic material, and the sound quality from the performances (many, if not all, are from New York) is good, and displays his smooth, effortless flow well, helping to reestablish why he's considered one of the greatest MCs ever. He runs through all the favorites -- "Paid in Full," "Follow the Leader," "My Melody," and "Eric B. Is President," the latter on which he changes the references to his former partner to let everyone know that he is indeed not there -- and he does them well, and is clearly performing to an excited and ...
