Weapons Of Choice 1984-2006 album
$10.49 By 1982, Henry Paul was completely devoid of musical direction, let alone inspiration. After issuing a truly fine album in Anytime a year before, Paul decided on yet another musical change in direction. On his eponymously titled final album for Atlantic before re-forming the Outlaws, Paul took the hard boogie stance of Feel the Heat and married it to pop hooks à la Boston, Loverboy, and Styx, making for a truly disastrous finale. The shrill edges in the vocals seem to be trying to get something out of Bruce Springsteen's mileage as well. But the choruses on "Nightline" are right off of Styx's Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums. Synthesizers careen into incredibly shattering -- yet compressed -- power chords; the guitars and drums are more filtered through effects than they are played. While it seems Paul was doing everything he could to write hooks -- and who knows whether this might not have ...

Weapons Of Choice 1984-2006 CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, but Bruce and Trower pen these 11 songs without outside assistance. Most tunes such as "Lives of Clay," a barely concealed rewrite of Cream's "Politician" lick, revisit familiar territory, and clearly these guys are not out to expand any boundaries. Bruce, who ...

Weapons Of Choice 1984-2006 music CDs
$7.95 FULL CIRCLE includes a special bonus disc, JAZZ/CONCORD, featuring Herb Ellis and Joe Pass. JAZZ/CONCORD, issued in 1973, was the first Concord Jazz LP and the first recording produced by Carl Jefferson, whose final production was FULL CIRCLE.
For its 25th anniversary in 1998, Concord Jazz came up with a unique package comprised of the first and last sessions that label founder Carl Jefferson produced. Jefferson was nothing if not consistent in his vision from beginning to end, for both albums were guitar duo sessions in a mainstream idiom with bass and drums. Flashing back a quarter of a century, Jazz/Concord (CJ-1) is a battle royal -- with the distinct personalities of easy-bopping, quote-happy Herb Ellis and all-over-the-place Joe Pass tumbling over and around each other as Ray Brown (bass) and Jake Hanna (drums) urge them on. They rarely have sounded happier than they do on Coleman Hawkins' "Stuffy," swinging like mad. The competitive tension and the informality of the session give this first Concord item a rough-and-ready atmosphere, almost like a live jam caught on the ...

| | Jarboe Thirteen Masks CD (1992) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Weapons Of Choice 1984-2006 music CDs
$14.69 Jarboe's first solo release outside of the Swans/Skin family tree is an admirably varied effort recorded at a variety of different sessions. Thirteen Masks often explores a number of styles not commonly seen in the work of Jarboe's regular bands, from nightclub jazz to modern dancefloor moves, while at the same time demonstrating the dark appeal which she brings to her music and singing. She is assisted throughout by a number of Swans members and long-standing associates, including guitarists Clinton Steele and Norman Westberg, bassist Algis Kizys, and once in a while by her longtime partner in music and life, Michael Gira. The general statement of her broad musical intent comes right from the start: "Listen" is delicate, with strange musical chimes and an emotive vocal, but it's immediately followed by "Red," a slamming hip-hop/industrial dance number created with help ...
