Ekkehard Ehlers is an artist who refuses to be pinned down by genre constrictions or fan expectations. Over the course of seven full-length albums and compilations he has paid tribute to Albert Ayler, produced an album of folk-tinged glitch music, reinterpreted Schoenberg, and written lullabies for newborns. So it makes perfect sense for Ehlers to reinvent himself yet again with A Life Without Fear. This time around he digs deep into the darkness and records a nine-song session of Delta blues soaked with nihilistic lyrics and fuzzed-out computer crackles and pops. His instrumentation of choice this time around varies from his other works, as he collaborates with a small-group using viola, trumpet, mouth harp, and guitar to create drones that sound like they're processed through a rusted beer can. Covering the traditional "Ain't No Grave" and Ralph Stanley's haunting "O Death," Ehlers paints a stark portrait that would be a fitting soundtrack to traveling the destroyed Deep South countryside and viewing the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina. It is this disturbing tone that Ehlers serves as a reminder of just how beautifully fragile the human condition is under the strains of adversity and despair. ~ Rob Theakston
Personnel: Ekkehard Ehlers; Howard Katz Fireheart (vocals, harp); Joseph Suchy (guitar, balafon); Bjorn Gottstein (viola); Franz Hautzinger (trumpet).
The Wire (p.55) - "Ehlers and his collaborators produce inventive, exploratory, electroacoustic collages. He renders squeaks, gurgles and growls out of violin and guitar..." Ekkehard Ehlers Life Without Fear Songs Life Without Fear Review

Life Without Fear CD music
$13.85 FARM is in every respect an equal to Dinosaur, Jr's 2007 comeback, BEYOND: a muscular, melodic monster that stands among the best albums the band has made. It possesses an impressive combination of vigor and consistency, sounding as if it could have arrived in the early '90s, minus some subtle distinctions in production and attitude. Dinosaur Jr.'s assuredness is striking; Mascis may drawl that he "did it wrong" on the pre-chorus of "There's No Here," but once again his tongue is firmly in cheek, and any traces ...

| | Marz Wir Sind Hier CD (2004)
Life Without Fear album
$13.45 "März's follow-up to their 2002 début Love Streams on Karaoke Kalk. Eleven new songs by Albrecht Kunze and Ekkehard Ehlers. It's all about positioning, i.e. the question of where you / I / we are standing now and here and in this particular moment; and März's songs describe the Here from their own personal perspective. It would seem to be the aspect of someone looking out from a park, if the titles 'März Im Park' ('Park in March') and 'Oktober Im Park' ('Park in October') are anything to go by; and yet it remains uncertain as to whether the fenced-off area of a park, with its circumscribed freedom -- simultaneously including and excluding -- is a place of relaxed tranquility, (deceptive) security or indeed a place of pacification. Places both conceivable and inconceivable superimpose themselves upon one another, and what remains is a feeling of uncertainty as to whether one should like to stay here or not.
März's second album is stronger and tighter, without losing any of the prettiness that made their debut, Love Streams, so charming. Ekkehard Ehlers and Albrecht Kunze have evacuated the more ...

Life Without Fear songs
$15.19 In the new millennium, Canadian label Arts & Crafts has become a kind of hipster-fodder supplier, harboring artists like the Dears, Feist, Broken Social Scene, and Phoenix among others, so newbies Young Galaxy definitely have the necessary backing credentials to propel them into indie stardom. However, the band -- made up of ex-Stars touring guitarist Stephen Ramsay and his girlfriend Catherine McCandless, plus their backup musicians -- unfortunately don't offer much of their own musical innovation to make their self-titled full-length debut especially interesting, or even notable. Almost all the tracks on Young Galaxy rely on heavily-effected guitars, spacy keyboards, and echoey vocals to create the group's slow, warm, full sound (the exception is the out-of-place singer/songwriter-ish "Embers," one of two tracks sung predominantly by McCandless), but the band seems to be so focused on delaying and reverbing their chords and layering their voices that they forget that occasional key or tempo changes are necessary to make an album more than just atmospheric background. Neither Ramsay nor McCandless are particularly inspiring lyricists, and because ...
