Drummer Danfis Prieto breathes fresh life into the relatively bland world of contemporary jazz on ABSOLUTE QUINTET. To begin with, Prieto assembles an unusual instrumental line-up, including saxophone, violin, cello, and keyboards, while the music blends categories by marrying funky fusion to avant-minded juxtapositions and soloing. Yet, as befits a session featuring a drummer as leader, ABSOLUTE QUINTET is intensely rhythmic, with polyrhythms scattered in every direction, and Prieto's octopus-limbed kit work shining throughout.

Down Beat (p.78) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Prieto writes pieces that are episodic and shift easily between time and key signatures." JazzTimes (p.125) - "As in exercise in contrasts, Pietro unleashes his sizzling, fusionesque fury against the slow-moving pulse of his dirgelike 'New Elephant.' He displays some astonishing polyrhythmic aplomb..." Absolute Quintet album
$10.05 Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," ...

Absolute Quintet CD music
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks ...

$21.29 This is a digitally remastered version of prog act Focus' MOTHER FOCUS.
Focus here featured virtuoso guitarist Jan Akkerman for the last time, not to work with his long-term writing partner Thijs Van Leer for another ten years. Mother Focus also sees Focus' highly skilled bass player Bert Ruiter try his hand in songwriting. The outcome includes the one of the finest funk tracks on the album -- the hilarious "I Need a Bathroom." The album begins with quite possibly the finest track on the album -- and maybe the most typical Focus -- the titular "Mother Focus." The funky theme underlying the number sets the mood for the rest of the LP with aplomb. Indeed, Mother Focus is far from the usual instrumental material. For this reason, Mother Focus may not appeal to the usual fans of the Dutch proggers. The number of feel-good tunes making up the album's core makes up for the lack of a rocking single ...
| | Brass Roots Purple Cha-Cha Heels CD (2003)
Absolute Quintet album
$10.65 This Boston, MA-area horns/percussion quintet is billed as a mambo band with pop sensibilities. The group features two trombonists, a percussionist, trumpeter, and baritone saxophonist. With this effort, they commingle mid-tempo, Latin-drenched choruses with peppery grooves and layered, mini-big band-type arrangements. The music is snappy, affable, and undeniably festive. The musicians' loose demeanor provides the radiant sheen that embellishes this production. And while this recording resides within the jazz idiom, the band merges a contemporary vibe with familiar stylistic elements. A joyful celebration of the musical spirits, for sure. On pieces such as "Tjader Dude" (a reference to the late vibist Cal Tjader), the band pursues elements of clave, with complex horn passages atop percussionist Ana Norgaard's pumping rhythms. Nonetheless, the artists' fluid motion is augmented by their perky arrangements, amid a few keenly executed twists and turns. A good shot of adrenaline for the Latin jazz genre indeed. ~ Glenn Astarita
