| | Kitty Wells Queen Of Country CD Kitty Wells Discography of CDs
Featuring 10 of the pioneering female country music artist's 81 hits, this best-of collects Kitty Wells's first smash, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," an answer to Hank Thompson's original "Wild Side of Life," as well as "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," later a hit for Ray Charles, and the sober "Paying for That Back Street Affair." Wells's unadorned vocals and unvarnished subject matter predated Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn's feisty material, and the plain instrumental backing here, featuring fiddle, guitars, and a hint of pedal steel, is refreshingly simple yet effective.

| | Patsy Cline Greatest Hits CD (1988) Remastered
Queen Of Country songs
$7.89 Recorded between 1961 & 1963. Includes liner notes by Jay Orr and Don Roy.
Recorded between 1960 & 1963. Originally released on Decca (DL7-4854). Includes liner notes by Jay Orr and Don Roy.
When Patsy Cline died in a plane cash in the early '60s she was at the top of her career, a star in both country and pop music. To this day, she is revered as the queen of country music.
Patsy's voice is the epitome of torch singing--emotional, yet distant enough from the flame not to get burned. Her superb voice, with its catches, chokes and soaring notes, changed the course of country and western music, and defined the new direction of female country artists.
Even non-coutry fans appreciate such legendary performances as the seamless, upbeat "Walking After Midnight"; the ultra-torchy "Sweet Dreams"; the swaying ballad "She's Got You"; Willie Nelson's bluesy "Crazy"; the bouncy "Back In Baby's Arms"; the definitive "I Fall To Pieces"...and the hits just go on and on and on.
Ironically, Cline, who considered herself a cowgirl, hated her successful pop tunes. She single-handedly removed the "western" from country & western, but that was her favorite music. She would rather be yodeling and singing mountain-style. Fortunately, she listened to her advisers and left us with a legacy of country-pop classics.
This is the longest selling album in the history of country music. Released in 1967, this collection of a dozen gems from country music's greatest female voice raced to #5 on the country charts ...
| | Larry Sparks Coldest Part Of Winter CD (2003)
Queen Of Country album
$13.99 It seems apt to release Larry Sparks' The Coldest Part of Winter in the middle of February. It's also an interesting coincidence that the Virginia-based Rebel released the album during the 2002-2003 season, one of the coldest Southern winters in recent history. One imagines a certain comforting warmth, however, in a new album by one of bluegrass' most steady hands. Listeners will not find anything radically different on Sparks' latest outing, and that is as it should be. Instead, listeners will find what they've come to expect: fine picking, vibrant vocals, and a lyrical emphasis on the values of the past. Mandolinist Scott Napier, banjoist Josh McMurray, bassist Matthew Madden, and fiddler Michael Cleveland join Sparks for a dozen traditionally ...
| | Pickin' Up The Pieces/Poco CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Queen Of Country CD music
$20.75 UK twofer combines the country rock pioneers' 1969 & 1970 albums. 20 tracks. BGO Records. 2004.
This two-fer CD gathers the first two albums by Richie Furay's post-Buffalo Springfield project, the country-rock band Poco: 1969's PICKIN' UP THE PIECES and 1970's POCO.
Of all the pioneering country-rock bands of the late '60s, Poco may well have been the one that got the hybrid the most right, at least initially. The group's high-energy, joyous, and infectious songs had none of the artfulness of the Byrds' attempt at fusing rock and country, and none of the cache of hipness that weighed down both the Eagles and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Poco just played and had fun in an unassuming way, at least at the outset, because latter-era Poco is every bit as laden with California cool as the above named bands. This release from England's Beat Goes On Records combines Poco's first two albums in a two-disc set, and it is an inspired (and obvious) pairing, ...
