Alt country musician Dave Alvin's compendium of covers of California-centric songs includes a doo-wop rendition of Brian Wilson's "Surfer Girl," a gutbucket blues version of John Fogerty's "Don't Look Now," and a downbeat rendition of John Stewart's "California Bloodlines." Alvin's baritone growl lends a warm intimacy to this collection of hymns to his home state.

| West Of The West Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Great Record! Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I find myself constantly going back to this record. I think "Here in California" is a fantastic duet. I think its a great record. Submitted by PhilJWatson (Lafayette, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Desecration of a Beautiful Song All I can say for this Dave Alvin release is that he should have left these songs in the hands of the original artists. His version of the late Kate Wolf's " Here in California "
is simply awful and Jim Ringers " Tramps
and Hawkers " gets the same terrible reading by Alvin.
Sorry not for me! Submitted by Bob (Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
falls short I've followed Dave Allen since his days with the Blasters. This has got to be his most dissapointed work so far. The only highlite was Surfer Girl. Submitted by Bob the blues man (Orange County USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

West Of The West album
$12.59 A gap of six years separates ASHGROVE from Dave Alvin's last batch of new songs, 1998's BLACK JACK DAVID (a live album and a selection of traditional songs came in between), and it sounds like he benefited from the break. As always, the consummate roots-rocker splits his time ...

| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
West Of The West music CDs
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some tracks were ...
| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
West Of The West songs
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
West Of The West album
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a ...
