The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. A tie-in with the Bratz toy line, the ROCK ANGELZ album features the five Bratz girls--Roxxi, Jade, Cloe, Sasha, and Yasmin--fronting their own band. Though they're known for having a "passion for fashion," these Bratz clearly know how to rock out, too. The music here is energetic, guitar-based pop in the Hilary Duff/Lindsay Lohan vein, though "Who I Am" and "Stand Out" add a metal edge to the Bratz's sound. As with any respectable 'tween-pop record, there are soaring power ballads on ROCK ANGELZ, including the yearning "Change the World" and the loner anthem "Nobody's Girl." For Bratz collectors and fans of Duff, Lohan, Avril Lavigne, and other like-minded artists, ROCK ANGELZ is sure to be an enjoyable album that's perfect for singalongs and slumber parties.

Dennis Brown's career went off the boil in the early '80s, until he paired up with Gregory Isaacs in 1984 and recorded two excellent albums, which turned back up the heat. The first, Two Bad Superstars Meet, was produced by Prince Jammy, and it was to him that the singer turned when he came to record 1985's Slow Down, which is now reissued by Greensleeves. By this point, Jammy had established himself at the forefront of dancehall production, but his style worked equally well with roots veterans like Brown himself. A rootsy sound permeated his productions, albeit cut through with digital sounds, while his heavy use of horns and mid-tempo rhythms harked back to the rocksteady age. All of this conspired to provide a perfect backdrop for Brown, and all of Slow Down just simmers. Its follow-up, The Exit, gained the lion's share of attention; however, all the elements that made that a great album were already in place here. Packed with powerful vocal performances, Brown shifts through emotional gears and lyrical themes, just as passionate on the love songs as the cultural tracks.
