Part of an extensive set of postwar Swiss radio recordings featuring rare concerts by notable jazz performers, this volume features Benny Goodman leading a small, all-star group. Included are saxophonist Zoot Sims, trumpeter Roy Eldridge, who is occasionally featured on vocals, and the Danish harmonica wizard Toots Thielmans, who also puts in a creditable performance on guitar on the classic soloing vehicle "Flying Home." With a track list that includes many of Goodman's best-known pieces transposed to a small band setting, those more familiar with Goodman's big band performances are in for a treat with this well-recorded swing and bebop-influenced set.
Personnel: Benny Goodman (clarinet); Nancy Reed (vocals); Toots Thielemans (guitar); Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Dick Hyman (piano); Charlie Short (bass guitar); Ed Shaughnessy (drums).

This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, ...

| | Crosstalk: The Best Of Moby Grape CD (2004)
Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series Vol. 14: Benny Goodman Lausanne 1950 album
$9.39 2004 compilation from the San Francisco-based Psychedelic Rock band. Overshadowed by their more successful San Fran compadres like Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape were often better at blending Folk, Blues, Country and Rock 'N' Roll than anyone else in the '60s. Based around eccentric singer/songwriter Skip Spence (formerly of Jefferson Airplane), Moby Grape were destined for bigger and better things, but Spence's emotional instability and bad management problems made sure that the band didn't survive past the late '60s. Still, their music lives on. Sony.
Precisely what the legal status of Moby Grape's original Columbia Records recordings is, at this writing (in late 2004), is anyone's guess -- the label's own legal department used to change its outlook like a weather vane, one season saying they were free-and-clear, and other months claiming they were the subject of litigation, much as the group's name remains a bone of contention between the surviving members and their original manager. What is certain is that Sony Music's domestic double-CD compilation of the band's work, Vintage: The Very Best of Moby Grape, appears and disappears from record store bins like the proverbial White Whale, here one day and gone the next, but officially out-of-print. And that set had its problems, offering ...
