| | Bob Lark In Her Eyes CD (2006)
Night Owls songs
$13.25 Trumpeter Bob Lark is the head of the jazz studies department at DePaul University but is virtually unknown in most of the jazz world. However on this set, he is joined by the great altoist Phil Woods, Woods' longtime sidemen bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin, and his former pianist Jim McNeely. Lark is not quite on the level of a Brian Lynch or Carl Saunders, but he is an excellent hard bop-based improviser with a warm tone and a creative imagination. Lark contributed six of the ten selections on this CD, which also has two bop standards and a pair of Woods numbers. The altoist consistently steals the show, still playing at his peak and creating one fiery and passionate solo after another, but Bob Lark fares well too. Hopefully he will record more often in the future outside of the college band circuit. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Jazz trumpeter Bob Lark is joined by alto sax legend Phil Woods and his quintet members Jim McNeely, Steve Gilmore, and Bill Goodwin. The quintet performs many new and exciting compositions by Bob Lark and Phil Woods. Also included is "Charlie's Wig", the only Charlie Parker tune never before recorded by Phil Woods in his long and successful career. This is bebop music at it's very best!Every ...
| | Blue Wisp Big Band Tribute CD (2007)
Night Owls album
$13.25 Much like the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at the Village Vanguard in New York City, the Blue Wisp Big Band has had a long running regular gig at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club for over a quarter century. The 16-piece group draws from a wide spectrum of styles and arrangements. Englishman Frank Griffith's contributions include a cool take of Horace Silver's "Strollin'" and the tense, driving "Ricochet," which sounds like it could have been written for film. Trombonist Paul Piller scored "The Heather on the Hill" in a setting that would have fit Woody Herman's repertoire, while his breezy scoring of George Gershwin's "Soon" is another gem. Baritone saxophonist Larry Dickson contributed the lush treatment of "Daydream" from the vast Duke Ellington songbook, along with an infectious Latin-flavored ...

Night Owls music CDs
$11.25 The Vocal ArtistWhat is a classical tenor to do when he doesn't want to sing opera? Like most classically-trained tenors, Patrick Stalinski can list many of the master works among his repertoire. While Patrick's early career focused on classical sacred performances, his real passion is to re-create traditional music in new ways. For those who would not normally listen to classical music, he strives to give them a taste of music's power and still feel ...
