Founded in 1999, OmniTone is a Brooklyn-based jazz label dedicated to releasing new recordings of "adventurous and listenable jazz" from today's foremost creative improvisers. On this impressive mix of straight-ahead, post-bop and Latin jazz, the New York-based Pete McCann finally takes center stage after years of being a sideman for artists like Kenny Wheeler, Kenny Garrett, Dave Liebman, the Mahavishnu Project, Peter Erskine, and Curtis Stigers. Creating a multifaceted, moodswinging date designed to appeal to both sophisticated jazz fans and Most Folks, as well as McCann and his quintet alternate from high-energy swinging to lower key affairs. The guitarist reveals his deft sense of improvisation from the start, taking a swift solo a few minutes into the opening title track, egged on by Mark Ferber's chugging drums and brushes and bassist John Hebert's cool grooving. McCann is a great ensemble player, too, easing in and out of John O'Gallagher's lush alto melody on "Jojo's Waltz" and doubling perfectly with his saxman on the opening segments of the progressive jazz piece "About Face." While McCann and his swing-happy crew seem most at home in the uptempo mode, (the feisty "Split Decision" comes to mind), they're not above playing it weird and intriguing on slower, hypnotic, and ambient numbers like "Hunter Gatherer." This is a strong indie jazz record that marks the solo emergence of a guitarist who shouldn't stay on the sidelines any longer. ~ Jonathan Widran

Most Folks album
$12.89 Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s and '80s as a music educator. Dental problems resulted in Moncur only playing once in a great while in the 1990s. He had been in obscurity for quite awhile when he was contacted by arranger Mark Masters for the Exploration project. Fortunately Moncur's playing proved to still be in his prime. Masters wrote sympathetic charts for many of the trombonist's finest pieces, utilizing an all-star nonet that could really dig into the inside/outside music. "Excursion," a very coherent three-minute free improvisation, is a change-of-pace and precedes the closing blues "Sonny's Back," a 1962 piece originally played by the Jazztet. This CD overall is very ...

| | Ravi Coltrane In Flux CD (2005)
Most Folks songs
$11.89 On his fourth studio effort, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane charts a softly expansive, reverently adventurous course that by no means shatters expectations, but never fails to impress. Quietly plugging away at his career, never exploiting his family name and focusing exclusively on deeply intellectual, harmonically complex post-bop, the least you can feel when listening to Coltrane is respect. He's not the "edgiest" player you'll hear, but such tracks as "Variations III" and "Scram Vamp" find Coltrane delving headlong ...
| | Trio Beyond Saudades CDs (2006)
Most Folks album
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. The results on this double-disc album, Saudades, are explosive, dynamic, and utterly compelling. The repertoire comes from Lifetime's songbook. Spectrum: The Anthology and the intense stunner of a set closer "Emergency" come from the band's debut album of the same name, and two more pieces, Young's "Allah Be Praised" and John Coltrane's "Big Nick" come from Turn It Over, the second Lifetime disc. ...
