Avishai Cohen contributed all ten selections to Continuo, originals that are often influenced by Middle Eastern music. Cohen's bass dominates throughout, easily taking the most solo space. His trio with pianist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Guilliana is tight, often being joined by Amos Hoffman on oud. The music is atmospheric, sometimes introspective, touched strongly by Western classical music and spontaneous in spots. The rate of this cd should be 6 or 7 stars! Avishai with Sam and Mark are a hell of a trio, making such incredible music, it's unbelievable how good the three work together, everything fits so perfectly, such a joy to listen to. And teh concert in Amsterdam, june this year was even better, brought tears to my eye's, best concert in years.

wonderful!
doesn't go off my CD player. The trio is great, and even better with Amos Hoffman, a great musician on his own, who fits right in, with the group and with the music.

One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space.
