Klaus Schulze staged two legendary concerts in 1994. They were on the 27th and 31st of May respectively. At that time, Schulze's fans were clamoring for a CD of remixes of his older material. He gave them something different. Das Wagner Desaster: Live is a double CD from those concerts. The source material for each show is the same, but the mixes are different. CD one is "The Wild Mix" and CD two is "The Soft Mix." The music is pure Schulze. It is classic Berlin school electronica by a master practitioner of the style. Inter*Face is a disappointment. Klaus Schulze combines Berlin school electronica with rock & roll textures better than most. He does so on this album and he also incorporates some (ouch!) disco beats. There are four tracks on this CD. The first three -- about half the disc -- are run of the mill at best. Track four, the title track, is vintage Schulze. It features spacy atmospheres, experimental timbres, symphonic textures, and deep sequences. The overall CD is uneven. Moon Shines at Night is a rich but simple collection of Middle Eastern songs performed by Djivan Gasparyan on the duduk (a reed-like Egyptian clarinet) with two supporting musicians. The structure for most of these songs is similar in nature, with the duduk soloing over the accompanying "drone" or foundation. Frequent Eno collaborator and guitar pioneer Michael Brook takes production credit for this release, doing a sort of Peter Gabriel-style nod to world music. Brook does exactly the right thing by providing the right acoustical setting and not much else (reminiscent of the wonderful ECM producer Manfred Eicher).
