After a myriad of battle hungry appearances on his crew members' albums, J.R. Writer had already built a rep among hip-hop heads as one of the Harlem Diplomats' best kept secrets. Yet another solo effort to come out of Cam'ron's DipSet empire, 2006's HISTORY IN THE MAKING follows suit with explosive production from Knoxville and the crystal-clear rhyme cadence that has become the crew's signature. With a total of 19 tracks, this CD has its share of bangers but, on the whole, HISTORY IN THE MAKING sticks to the formula with a slew of guest spots from the Diplomats (interestingly, on most tracks J.R.'s flow is indistinguishable from Cam'ron's). Standout tracks include "My Life," "Back Wit It," and "Byrd Call."
Some consider JR Writer to be the lyrical wonder of the Diplomats crew, and there's plenty of evidence why on History in the Making, an album overstuffed in the usual Dipset fashion but ultimately a rewarding effort. Sounding much like his mentor Cam'ron, Writer opens the album with the hypnotic and hungry anthem "To Be a Diplomat," a quick run through the man's past with that freestyle freedom he perfected during his mixtape and rap battle past. "Grill Em," "Byrd Call," and "That's a Bet" with Paul Wall are the club cuts and highlights, keeping the album from sounding like a volume of the man's Writer's Block mixtape series. The "Moments in Love"-sampling bedroom cut "Xtasy" has chart ambition, too, but most of the album is street level and Dipset chaotic, something best represented by the word-filled wonder "Zoolander." While it may not be worthy of such an ambitious title, History in the Making brings Writer from the background to the foreground in the world of Dipset and gives every reason why he deserves it. | | Petey Pablo Diary Of A Sinner: 1st Entry CD (2001) Edited
History In The Making album
$9.19 The title of this debut album by southern rapper Petey Pablo tells a lot about the context. Rather than just a bunch of randomly assembled rhymes, DIARY OF A SINNER is a concept album of sorts, in which a gangsta slowly but surely unravels the complex, unsavory details of his life, from the first fall from grace on through. There's a strong religious underpinning to the album as well, as the conflict between faith in God and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle is reiterated throughout these tracks. There's also a gospel sensibility that crops up occasionally amid the blazing hip-hop tracks. The end of this sinner's story is a happy one, though, as Pablo delivers "My Testimony," stepping back from the violence and taking solace in the love of his family. It doesn't hurt matters that Timbaland offers some of the distinctive, sonically rich production that is his trademark, giving DIARY OF THE SINNER a compelling audio sheen.
Just as they'd done a decade earlier with West Coast gangsta rap, the major labels funneled millions of dollars into the early-2000s Dirty South boom, catapulting previously unknown artists like Petey Pablo to overnight-superstar status. Like Ludacris and Nelly, Pablo had a major label (Jive) with enough clout to guarantee national exposure and a lead single with a great video ("Raise Up") to drive album sales. And, like what happened with Ludacris and Nelly -- and many others -- Jive proved that they could manufacture a multi-platinum rap superstar overnight with its industry clout. But, as disheartening as the industry politics may be, particularly to all the myriad other Dirty South rappers with no chance at similar success, you can't slight Pablo -- he proves himself worthy of big-league success on his debut album, Diary of a Sinner. First of all, and most obviously, there's the gigantic lead single, "Raise Up." Jive went out of its way to hook up Pablo with Timbaland for a few songs, and the results are surely worth the hefty tab. Sure, "I" and "I Told Y'All" are album highlights, but it's "Raise Up" that once again showcases precisely why Timbaland is the best of the best. In addition to the trademark shuffling, bass-heavy rhythm and the catchy, singalong hook, Timbaland throws in some swirling guitar and violin sounds for a frenzied feeling that makes "Raise Up" one of the rowdiest Dirty South anthems of the decade. The remainder of the album isn't nearly as riveting as "Raise Up," but it's still worth listening to. Pablo shows that he's something of a Southern DMX -- a gruff, thuggish man among boys who is thoughtful and lyrical as well as spiritual and moral. Plus, though he's not afraid to boast, he never raps about money, cars, women, drugs, or anything remotely ...

History In The Making CD music
$22.35 Germany's Bear Family label has created an amazing series in their Blowing the Fuse project. Each volume features chart and jukebox sellers of all stripes of R&B, soul, and early rock & roll. From the looks of things, 1956 was a wild and woolly year with Bo Diddley ("Pretty Thing"), Chuck Berry ("Roll Over Beethoven"), and Little Richard ("Rip It Up" and "Long Tall Sally") all making this set. But it's not all rock & roll. Clyde McPhatter's "The Great Pretender" is here, as are Ray Charles' "I'll Drown in My Tears" and Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," just to name a few more. Also in the register are James Brown's early soul with "Please, Please, Please" and Big Joe ...

| | Oli Silk So Many Ways CD (2006)
History In The Making songs
$12.59 This twenty-something British composer/keyboardist who made his initial splash in the U.K. in the early 2000s as part of the duo Sugar & Silk, may have been a new face on the U.S. smooth jazz scene in 2006, but Oli Silk's solo debut perfectly summarizes what the genre is all about. He starts with a sweet blend of laid-back atmospheres and a beautiful acoustic piano melody on "Eve's Song," then goes slightly funkier and urban on "So Many Ways" (featuring the soaring chorus vocals of Yvonne John-Lewis). Like something out of the Jeff Lorber school of soulful keyboarding, the Fender Rhodes-driven "London to L.A. Express" captures the popular old school vibe the genre is often known for. And just when he's getting a bit too laid back, he grooves it up with guest saxman Jaared for the disc's most lively cut "Deuces." Sadly, that track was too adventurous for the "don't want to offend anyone" vibe ...
