| | Cracker Greenland CD Cracker Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Since his days with the genre-busting 1980s alternative rock outfit Camper Van Beethoven, David Lowery has been moving progressively toward a more roots-oriented, singer-songwriter sound. His later work with Cracker bears this out, and the band's 2006 release GREENLAND is Lowery's most stripped-down and straightforward to date, miles away from the grungey bombast of earlier releases.
Steeped in the sounds of folk and alt-country, with a touch of indie rock thrown in for balance, GREENLAND floats gently along the surface, yet there is a deeply personal undercurrent to nearly every song on the record. Lowery's songs explore themes of loss, heartbreak, and personal upheaval in a way that feels pointedly autobiographical, giving his clever, detail-rich lyrics an added poignancy. This is particularly notable for a band that's often big on tongue-in-cheek irony, and it is this poignancy that gives GREENLAND its winning edge.
Personnel: David Lowery (vocals, guitar, strings, piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Johnny Hickman (vocals, guitar); Alan Weatherhead (guitar, slide guitar, keyboards); Mark Linkous (guitar, synthesizer); David Immerglück (electric guitar); Margaret White (violin); Kenny Margolis (accordion, piano, keyboards); Craig Harmon (organ, keyboards); Lauren Hoffman (synthesizer, background vocals); Miguel Urbiztondo (drums, tabla, percussion); Frank Funaro (drums, percussion); John Morand (percussion); Casey Martin, Caitlin Cary (background vocals).

CMJ (p.5) - "The stubborn sarcasm deep in Lowery's larnyx and the skillful veteran alt-rock instrumentation add more depth than any other surviving alt-rock also-ran..." No Depression (p.110) - "Frontman David Lowery sounds more reflective than usual as he wonders whatever happened to his California heyday..." | | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Greenland CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed ...
| | Brian Wilson Smile CD (2004)
Greenland music CDs
$16.19 Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone nominally operating under the pop/rock umbrella had ever ventured. Notoriously, intraband conflict (Mike Love, in particular, found the Wilson/Van Dyke Parks-penned conceptual work too far out) kept the record from being released. With several oceans' worth of water under the bridge, Wilson finally decided to finish the aborted project three-and-a-half decades later, adhering closely to the original blueprints. The results are as timelessly breathtaking as the original version must have been to the lucky few who first heard the initial tapes.
With sterling support from his backing band the Wondermints, Wilson meticulously pieced together the conceptual, orchestral puzzle of SMILE into a rewarding, cohesive whole. Even decades down the line, it still sounds miles away from anything else in the world of popular music. ...

| | Tom Lehrer That Was The Year That Was CD (1965)
Greenland music CDs
$9.15 Imagine a Harvard professor (which he was) with a gift for the piano (which he had), and the iconoclastic humorous bent of a Lenny Bruce or George Carlin (right on the money), and you'll get a good picture of musical humorist Tom Lehrer, whose delightfully twisted ditties presaged the counterculture of both the Beats and the hippies. Unlike ...

| | Rick Wakeman Live CD (2005)
Greenland album
$30.29 This concert album captures prog-rockers Rick Wakeman and Dave Cousins in a live performance recorded in Exeter, England, in July 1988.
Except for one track, this CD -- billed as volume one in "the Witchwood Media Archive Series" -- was recorded live in Exeter, England, on July 14, 1988, by Rick Wakeman and Dave Cousins. It's odd, though, that Wakeman gets the top of the duo billing, as it's really more a Dave Cousins show, with Wakeman as accompanist. All of the songs are sung and written by Cousins, with the exception of "Part of the Union," the big hit by Cousins' band, the Strawbs -- which, many forget, Wakeman was also a part of briefly in the early '70s, prior to his rise to superstardom with Yes. The bulk of the disc has unplugged performances of early-'70s Strawbs tunes with Cousins on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Wakeman on grand piano, comprising the only full-length show the pair ever did in Britain as a duo. In fact all of the songs on which Wakeman and Cousins both play were originally released by the Wakeman-Cousins lineup of the Strawbs on the early-'70s albums From the Witchwood and Just a Collection of Antiques and ...
