Instant Live: First Avenue - Minneapolis, MN, 3/15/06 album
$9.09 Up until their 1974 album, PHENOMENON, England's UFO had issued several albums that did little to expand their cult fan base at home, let alone worldwide. But through an early-'70s tour with German metallists the Scorpions, they finally found the missing piece to the puzzle--guitar wizard Michael Schenker. UFO convinced Schenker to leave the Scorpions (which wasn't an easy task, since his older brother Rudolf was a member), and their '74 release sounds like a band reborn.
Schenker's stellar playing seems to have lit a fire under the compositions, many of which rank amongst UFO's all-time best--namely the soon-to-be live show-stoppers "Doctor Doctor," and "Rock Bottom" (as evidenced on UFO's classic STRANGERS ...

| | Mercury Program Data Learn The Language CD (2002)
Instant Live: First Avenue - Minneapolis, MN, 3/15/06 music CDs
$9.49 The third album by Florida-based quartet Mercury Program is a small departure, eliminating vocals entirely and adding electronics for the first time to what had previously been a richly acoustic, almost jazzy sound. The band is still centered around Whitney Travisano's electric piano and vibraphone (guitarist Tom Reno and drummer Dave LeBleu also add vibes to several songs), which gives A Data Learn the Language a cool, mellow feel, like the Sea and Cake reinterpreting their favorite Modern Jazz Quartet sides. The electronics and loops are introduced sparingly, supporting the eight lengthy songs and adding new and interesting textures, but never becoming the center of musical attention. A Data Learn the Language will be of no interest to those who find instrumental post-rock insufferably dull, but it's consistently melodic, rhythmically varied, and unfailingly listenable. Coctails and Tortoise fans take note. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Deke Leonard's Iceberg Iceberg CD (2005)
Instant Live: First Avenue - Minneapolis, MN, 3/15/06 songs
$15.55 Though known mostly as a guitarist for Man, Deke Leonard also did some work on his own in the 1970s, sometimes as the head of Deke Leonard's Iceberg. Wireless collects previously unreleased recordings he made for radio during the decade, the first seven tracks coming from European broadcasts of Deke Leonard's Iceberg between 1972 and 1974 (the exact dates and locations are not known), the final four from a BBC John Peel session in February 1978. The 1972-1974 material is an awkward, and not too pleasing, mix of boogified bluesy rock with some art rock brush strokes, not helped by the dull sound (though the fidelity is basically of studio standard). Particularly due to some pointed, quizzical circular guitar riffs, there's sometimes the strange feeling that you're hearing a blues-oriented bar band trying to be Yes, or vice versa. It's not the most inviting combination, and when you throw in the thin vocals of limited power, you have music that even lovers of '70s hard rock/blues-rock blends might seldom dig out of the archive. Leonard plays it much more straightforward, and much poppier and roots-rockier, on the better-sounding 1978 Peel session, though the songs aren't anything to highly recommend. Ending the disc are a couple of Elvis Presley covers from that session -- inessential oddities from an inessential addition to the Leonard discography. ~ Richie Unterberger
