Salsa fans hungering for a woman's touch have limited options. Artists like Brenda K. Starr and India are the only voices holding down the fort, and for a younger audience who doesn't want to listen to artists who share more in common with their parents' generation than their own, the cause may seem hopeless. That was, at least, before the debut of la Princesa de la Salsa, Kiuldret. The youthful puertorriqueña puts her best, Steve Madden-clad foot forward (the shoe designer is included in the credits) with her 2006 debut, Corazón Enamorado. Also contributing their talents to the effort are pop-salsa teen sensation N'Klabe (yes, they do find an opportunity to shout "I love salsa!") and reggaeton MC Nemesys. Produced and arranged by seasoned veterans Ramon B. Sanchez and Andy Guzman, the record has both interest above and beyond the average, and the sparkle and shine of an urban/salsa classic. Though Kiuldret sounds a little green at times, especially in higher registers, her command of her voice is truly remarkable. At times silky and sensitive, at others blazing, Kiuldret shows the necessary raw talent to outlast her teen appeal to blossom into a true force in the genre. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

Corazon songs
$10.15 Taking their name from the term "en clave," a reference to the heartbeat of the Afro-Cuban rhythm section, N'Klabe declares that they are all about salsa and nothing else. With an honorable goal, to bring the love of salsa to a disenchanted generation, N'Klabe sets out to turn the tides with I Love Salsa!, their debut CD for Sony International. Lead vocalists Héctor José Torres Donato, Félix Javier Torres, and Johnny Maldonado Díaz have made a lot of progress toward that end, with a number one hit on Latin charts to their credit, "Amor de una Noche." N'Klabe is a radio success and a favorite with younger audiences. With a look even too clean-cut to be called boy band, and a sound that's even cleaner, the salsa that they love is all by the book. The arrangements, vocal/instrumental performance, and repertoire are all woefully unremarkable. Though not a strong selection for those already familiar with the style, this squeaky-clean debut performance has found a home with a new audience. N'Klabe has gone to great lengths, from the album's cover art to the title cut's coro, to reach a yet untapped ...

$14.79 Montenia performs at her restaurant in Springfield, MA on Saturday nights. ***********************************************************Montenia: Love from L.A.:The new compilation CD -- "Montenia: Love From L.A." -- pairs Montenia's self-titled cassette single from 1990, with her debut 1994 CD "In the Shuffle." For both projects, Montenia drew upon the solid core group of top flight musicians who accompanied her during the decade she filled night clubs and concert venues in Southern California. All twelve tracks are filled with great vocals and superb instrumental backing and solos. Montenia was born in Detroit and traveled the world as a child while her father was in the US Air Force, before the family settled in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her early singing influences were Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald, but she soon forged her own sound and way in ...
