(3 Customer Reviews)
International surfing star Donavon Frankenreiter recorded his debut release under the guidance of his friend and fellow surfer Jack Johnson. His second album finds the genial surfer striking out on his own while keeping his laid-back attitude, exuding good vibes on a home-spun set of loose, R&B flavored songs that includes the vintage-sounding title track and the Little Feat-like "Let It Go." And it'll come as no surprise to learn that the album's final track, the gentle, crepuscular "Beautiful Day," is a dead ringer for a Jack Johnson song.

Move By Yourself album
$7.59 G. Love first appeared on the music scene in a pre-Eminem era when a white rapper was generally seen as little more than a Vanilla Ice redux, but his 1994 debut album showed that he had more on his mind than being the Caucasian P.M. Dawn. As these tracks make apparent, G. Love (Philadelphia-born Garrett Dutton) was influenced as much by blues ...
| | Warren Haynes Tales Of Ordinary Madness CD (1993)
Move By Yourself CD music
$9.89 Produced by Chuck Leavell, Warren Haynes' first solo album is a refreshing change of pace from his work with the latter-day incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band. Although the feel of this album is undeniably classic rock, with much of Free's bluesy swagger, it is also vaguely reminiscent of '80s rock at times (check out the Mr. Big-esque verse to "Fire in the Kitchen"). The focus on Tales of Ordinary Madness is clearly on Haynes' songwriting chops. For the most part, the songs on this record are tight and concise, focusing on immediate riffs, gritty vocals, and cool arrangements to sell them. This, however, is not to suggest that Haynes has stopped tearing it up with his guitar, and he amply demonstrates why he is one of the most lauded straight-ahead rock lead guitarists of the '90s. The various bands that back up Haynes are all quite good, and notables Bernie Worrell and producer Leavell both make guest appearances on keyboards. Standout ...

| | Gov't Mule Deja Voodoo CD (2004)
Move By Yourself songs
$7.99 DEJA VOODOO serves as a comeback for Gov't Mule, who lost founding member Allen Woody in August 2000. Bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts carried on with a search to fill Woody's shoes, and this led to live recordings featuring guest bassists on each cut. This studio outing welcomes the arrival of former Black Crowes bass player Andy Hess and keyboardist Danny Louis, whose entry transforms the Mule into a quartet, upping the creative ...
| | Amy Winehouse Back To Black CD (2006)
Move By Yourself album
$12.49 BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.

| | Myshkin Corvidae CD (2005)
Move By Yourself album
$11.89 Corvidae isn't the first album by Myshkin's Ruby Warblers, a band that singer/songwriter Myshkin formed in 2001 (after having been recording as a solo artist since the early '90s). But it is a fine place to get acquainted with their moody style of folk-rock, which draws on influences ranging from jazz, cabaret, and the blues to East European gypsy music. With a name like Myshkin, it isn't surprising that the singer/songwriter (who wrote all of the songs on this 2005 release) would have some East European influences -- and when Corvidae is playing, one often thinks of the musical contributions that gypsies have made in countries like Russia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. But Myshkin is very much an American -- she grew up in the Midwest, which has attracted its share of East European immigrants over the years -- and she certainly gets plenty of creative inspiration from the United States. Jazz, in fact, is an influence throughout this 41-minute disc; dusky, haunting gems like "Caledonia," "For Mimi in Jail," "Blackberry Winter," and "The Dance" essentially fall into the folk-rock category, but their debt to the jazz-noir/torch song aesthetic is obvious. No one will accuse Myshkin of sounding like someone who doesn't have eclectic tastes; Corvidae gives the impression that within the course of several hours, she is quite capable of listening to everyone from Rickie Lee Jones to Billie Holiday to the great Romanian singer Maria Tanase (with perhaps a little Marlene Dietrich thrown in for good measure). But Corvidae, for all its risk-taking, never sounds forced or unnatural; while Myshkin is all over the place in terms of influences, her work never fails to sound totally organic on this excellent, if brief, ...
